Nokia introduces MM7 Web services interface for wide deployment of third party MMS content
Nokia supports mobile Web services as a key technology in linking systems and enhancing business opportunities between operators and content providers
Nokia introduced its first MM7 interface for the Nokia MMS solution. MM7 is a mobile Web service interface standardized by the 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project). In the Internet, Web services interfaces have rapidly become widely accepted business integration technology. Web services in the mobile environment will act as a bridge between mobile network servers and web/application servers, integrating the Internet and mobile domains.
“A rapidly increasing demand for new and versatile mobile content calls for an open standard based method which connects mobile networks with third party service provider systems. Mobile Web services will open up promising business opportunities for content providers and operators alike. This technology will also remove the barriers of costly and proprietary systems by linking mobile and web domains in a coherent manner,” said Niklas Savander Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Software, Nokia.
Common standard-based Web services interfaces will provide operators and content developers with more opportunities to collaborate in innovating and deploying revenue generating mobile services more timely and cost-effectively. For instance, an MMS content provider and an operator can integrate their systems using Web service interface, so that the MMS content, such as a daily news flash, will be available to mobile users.
Mobile Web services interfaces will allow operators to increase their revenues by offering their unique mobile assets, such as billing capabilities, location or presence information, in addition to transport, to any service provider that would benefit from such services.
Mobile Web services interfaces are standardized in various industry fora, such as the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), the 3GPP and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) of which Nokia is an active member. Mobile Web services interfaces will be implemented based on widely accepted standard technologies, thus providing a common and interoperable way to define, publish and use mobile value added services. These technologies are SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), XML (Extensible Markup Language), WSDL (Web Services Description Language), and HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol).
Mobile Web services interfaces will become an integral part of Nokia’s server offering, initially including MMS, terminal management and presence solutions. The MM7 interface will be available for the Nokia MMS solution during the first half, 2003.
