Nokia Makes VPN Mobile
Today, Nokia is introducing a complete end-to-end security solution to provide the enterprise mobile workforce with secure connections to enterprise network resources. A key component of the Nokia Mobile VPN (Virtual Private Network) solution is the standards-based IPSec VPN mobile client software developed by Nokia for Symbian Operating System devices such as Nokia 9200 Series Communicators. To address the challenges associated with deploying and managing mobile handset security, Nokia developed the Nokia Security Service Manager (NSSM). Consistent with an open, end-to-end solution offering, the Nokia Mobile VPN Client will be interoperable with, for example, the award-winning VPN gateway software from Nokia’s global partner, Check Point Software Technologies (NASDAQ:CP). This Nokia Mobile VPN solution is backed by Nokia “First Call, Final Resolution” support and service.
“Mobility is a huge competitive advantage for enterprises. The Nokia Mobile VPN client, together with the Nokia Security Service Manager, provides enterprises with the ability to securely extend their business critical applications out to the mobile workforce. This enhances productivity and helps to reduce costs,” said Erik Anderson, Senior Vice President, Business Applications, Nokia Mobile Phones. “Nokia uniquely understands the requirements of a secure mobile world. “
The number of mobile handsets with connectivity to the Internet is expected to grow rapidly as mobile data rates increase. With this increase in mobile connectivity to enterprise networks, security requirements remain equivalent to those of wired connections. A number of security requirements are best met with open, standards-based IPSec technology. The Nokia Mobile VPN solution uses industry standard protocols such as IPSec between VPN clients and gateways supporting both legacy and PKI authentication. This allows mobile users to authenticate using username/password pairs, security tokens, or X.509 digital certificates. The Nokia Mobile VPN Client supports DES (56bit) and 3DES (168bit) encryption and SHA‑1 and MD5 for data integrity.
For enterprises, the Nokia Mobile VPN solution can extend their network infrastructure to mobile handsets, offering their employees access to business applications while they are away from the office. Extending a network to handsets requires a tool such as NSSM to handle the management and support of the increasing number of new handsets. With NSSM, security administrators can centrally and cost-effectively provision VPN client software and related security policies for large numbers of mobile handsets. When using Nokia IP Series network security appliances with VPN-1Ň/FireWall-1Ň software from Check Point Software Technologies, this solution implements a reliable infrastructure that supports core enterprise services.
For mobile operators, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs) the Nokia Mobile VPN solution provides opportunities to deliver new, differentiated wireless data services to extend their current services portfolio.
The Nokia Mobile VPN solution will be available through selected system integrators and resellers. Deliveries of the Nokia Mobile VPN Solution begin during Q1 2003.
