Kada Systems Selected by Mobicom for J2ME enabled Mobile Phones
Kada's Java Virtual Machine Secures Sun "Java Powered" Brand for Texas Instruments' TCS2100 GPRS Chipset
BURLINGTON, Mass. – November 18, 2002 – Kada Systems, a leading independent provider of certified J2ME software deployment solutions for mobile solution providers, today announced that Mobicom Corporation, a leading designer, developer, manufacturer and marketer of customized mobile phones and other wireless terminals in China and other world markets has selected Kada's Mobile Java Platform for the Texas Instrument's TCS2100 GPRS chipset.
Kada also announced that it has passed Sun Microsystems' Java Technical Compatibility Kit (TCK) requirements for Connected Limited Device Configuration and the Mobile Information Device Profile (CLDC/MIDP) on the Texas Instrument's TCS2100 chipset. As a result, it has received the "Java Powered™" brand for the Kada Mobile Java Platform for this environment and is currently the only virtual machine vendor to deliver a CLDC/MIDP compliant implementation on the TCS2100 Chipset.
The TCS2100 Chipset is designed to provide handset manufacturers with a complete operating environment that integrates many of the phone's services and functions. By building Java functionality into the foundation, Kada allows handset OEMs and ODMs to focus more on device design and development, shrinking their time to market.
Mobicom will be integrating the technology into the GPRS mobile handsets that they are developing for PTIC Capital Group, the leading telecommunications equipment manufacturer in China. "By utilizing the TI Software Development Kit pre-integrated with Kada's JVM, we are able to quickly scale up our Java-enabled phone development," said Liang Chen, Director of Business Development, Mobicom. "This saves us critical time to market and allows us to focus on the hardware design, not the Java implementation. Otherwise we would have to hire the software experience and waste significant time and resources on just that aspect of the development."
TI chose Kada as its JVM vendor because it is the only vendor able to meet the stringent size, portability and configurability requirements necessary to ensure the broadest possible use of TI's wireless chipset solutions. TI is already a clear leader in the mobile phone space and is working toward rapidly becoming the leading Java technology enabler for the wireless market.

According to a Gartner Dataquest Perspectives Piece titled "Platforms: Lowering Entry Barriers for Mobile Manufacturers," A. Brown, S. Bruederle, B. Wood, April 2002, "Platform or reference designs have become increasingly important within the mobile marketplace. This means that existing third-tier manufacturers or new entrants can benefit from top-tier technology licensing to produce new products. This innovation is allowing new and existing mobile phone manufacturers to bring advanced products to market more quickly."
