MediaQ Launches Multimedia Platform Controller For Mass Market PDAs And Wireless Handsets

MQ-1188 Controller Provides Handheld Systems with High-Performance Video/Graphics, Baseband Interface, and SDIO Controller

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov 18, 2002 - MediaQ, Inc. today announced the MQ-1188 Multimedia Platform Controller for PDA and mobile wireless devices. With twice the clock-rate of earlier MediaQ chips, the MQ-1188 dramatically boosts the performance of graphics functions such as color image capturing and rendering, and video playback. The new chip also features a built-in interface to popular baseband processors for wireless connectivity, and integrated SDIO (Secure Digital IO) controllers for data storage and peripherals. This makes the MQ-1188 controller an ideal solution for mass- market handheld and wireless devices such as PDAs and sophisticated mobile phone handsets with large, color displays.

Running at 66Mhz, the MQ-1188 controller enables OEMs to design and deliver smart mobile devices capable of handling a new generation of multimedia and wireless applications and services. The embedded frame buffer and 64-bit 2D graphics engine enhance game playing and other graphics- intensive applications. The industry's highest bandwidth of up to 12Mbytes/sec SDIO controller provides unparalleled expandability and connectivity options using memory cards as well as card-based peripherals such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. To address OEM concerns over system power budgets, especially in mobile phones, the MQ-1188 is designed for ultra low power consumption.

"The MQ-1188 Multimedia Platform Controller is specifically optimized to deliver true multimedia experiences on high-volume handheld and mobile wireless devices," said Elie Antoun, President and CEO of MediaQ. "This new product delivers high-end graphics, video, and audio capabilities, enabling OEMs to build multi-function PDAs and mobile phone handsets. Mobile wireless devices that incorporate the MQ-1188 w ill simply be more capable of handing exciting new user applications like video playback, graphics- intensive games, and image-based services.

Baseband CPU Interface

The MQ-1188 is the first MediaQ product that directly interfaces to 2G, 2.5G, and 3G baseband processors. It supports fix cycle read/write bus interface to connect to CPUs that do not have Ready (RDY) or Wait handshake input signals. The integrated interface simplifies the design of target devices and eases the way for wireless applications on PDAs.

Video Capture & Playback Support

The MQ-1188 provides superior hardware assist for video playback applications. The video stream can be input from the CPU host interface, or from the CCIR656-compliant Video Input port to which virtually any CMOS or CCD camera can be attached or integrated.

The sophisticated video-processing engine enables video capture and rendering. The same video engine provides post-processing support for MPEG4 or camera video streams. The efficient image interpolation algorithms allow the video to be streamed at low resolution for full screen playback without significant loss of image quality. This feature provides high-quality video playback functionality while alleviating compute and memory access overheads from the host CPU.

2D Graphics Acceleration

The new MediaQ controller features even better graphics output than earlier generations, with support for up to 256K colors through improved dithering techniques. Other graphics acceleration features include rectangular source-copy block transfers, hardware ROPs and Bresenham line draw, pattern and area fill, monochrome to color conversion, and clipping and transparency.

Embedded Memory

The MQ-1188 has a 64-bit wide internal bus to 256KB of embedded memory providing scalable bandwidth of up to 528MB/sec. The embedded SRAM provides on-chip storage for frame buffer, video buffers and transactional buffers for USB, SDIO, and audio.

Low-Power Consumption

The MQ-1188 operates at very low voltages, which is ideal for mobile phones and other mass-market handheld devices. Core voltage is programmable for operation at 1.35 volts to 1.65 volts; I/O voltage ranges from 2.375 volts to 3.6 volts. State of the art advanced 0.15-micron Low Leakage process technology conserves power, while the embedded SRAM helps extend system battery life. MediaQ's proprietary DynamiQ Power Management System provides fine-grained power management, which includes efficient gated clock design to conserve power in active and inactive modules; selective power down on individual modules; and software and hardware supported power down modes.

Hardware and Software Support

With support for multiple OSs, microprocessors, LCD panels, and video camera types, the MQ-1188 helps simplify decision-making for OEM design engineers and managers. The controller supports all major operating systems in the PDA and cell phone markets, including Microsoft(R) Windows(R) CE/Pocket PC and Palm OS(R). To speed system integration, the MQ-1188 integrates key interface functions with direct support for major microprocessor architectures, including Intel(R)StrongARM/Xscale and Motorola Dragonball(TM).

Integrated Peripheral Set

The MQ-1188 Multimedia Platform Controller gives OEMs flexibility in their choice of peripherals, thus enabling them to implement systems with targeted connectivity options at the lowest cost and in the smallest form-factor. The controller has built-in interfaces for USB 1.1 Device, USB 1.1 Host (OHCI compatible), Secure Digital IO (SDIO), Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), and AC97/I(2)S audio codec.

Pricing and Availability

MediaQ's MQ-1188 Multimedia Platform Controller is manufactured using the 0.15-micron Low Leakage process. The 144-pin ECSP package is 10 square millimeters in size with a 0.8-millimeter pitch. Samples of the MQ-1188 are available to OEMs immediately. Production volume is expected to begin in Q4, 2002 with pricing of less than $10 per unit for 10,000 unit volumes. Device drivers for major operating systems are included and evaluation boards are available for most embedded CPUs.
