Orange Launches In-Vehicle Solution for Fleet Companies

LONDON, Nov 22, 2002 - Orange UK today announces the launch of Orange Fleet Link. The wirefree(TM) solution enables fleet controllers to dramatically improve the management of their operations by enabling critical driver and vehicle information to be sent wirelessly between the vehicle and the office. The wireless solution enables data such as the vehicle location, alarms and real time status reports to be automatically transferred between a "black box" within the vehicle and fleet control and scheduling systems in the office.

By sending details of new jobs directly to the driver in the nearest available vehicle in real time, fleet companies are able to improve their overall efficiency through improved utilisation of their vehicles. Scheduling and journey planning can be based on analysis of data from the fleet enabling organisations to be more responsive to customers, improve service levels and reduce costs. Drivers can also concentrate on driving as their pick up and delivery destinations are held in the in-vehicle data terminal.

As well as machine to machine monitoring, the 'intelligent' "black box" concealed within the vehicle also enables the driver to make and receive voice calls whilst making the use of hands-free compulsory. An intuitive touch-screen interface has been developed to minimise driver distraction by obtaining connection to incoming voice calls by touching any part of the screen on the ruggedised unit. For increased safety, companies also have the option of locking the system so that voice calls can only be made when the vehicle is stationary.

Orange Fleet Link can also help companies to better manage their voice call costs to their vehicle fleets as controllers have the ability to restrict the specific numbers that can be dialled from the vehicle. This is particularly useful for international fleet companies who are able to better manage their international cost forecasts based on the simple flat rate international roaming Orange talk plans.

The in-vehicle solution has been developed to offer companies the choice of four different levels of functionality. The most basic solution provides vehicle tracking, real time positioning, route history and trailer security. The full voice and data solution is an integrated management system including the options of fuel management and a task system with a variety of features that is integrated into existing office systems. Having chosen their level of functionality, customers can then choose their preferred payment system. The Orange Fleet Link units can either be purchased during set up or purchase costs can be spread throughout the length of the contract.

Cynthia Gordon, Marketing Director, Orange Business Solutions UK, said: "After talking to fleet companies we realised that vehicle tracking was just one basic function that could make these companies more efficient. We are confident that by bringing together a range of in-vehicle voice and data wirefree(TM) functions we have created a unique solution that will improve day to day management of the fleet and reduce costs."

Orange developed the solution using technology and expertise provided by Aeromark who are experts in integrated communications and telematics technology. Aeromark will assist in supporting the customer with technical support, advice and software upgrades.
