Symbian and Texas Instruments Extend Collaboration on Symbian OS and Wireless OMAP(TM) Platform
DALLAS and LONDON, Dec 2, 2002 - At the Symbian Partner Event in London today, Symbian and Texas
Instruments Incorporated (NYSE: TXN) (TI) announced that they are extending their strategic cooperation to further optimize the performance
of Symbian OS on TI's wireless OMAP(TM) platform as part of the Symbian Platinum Partner Program. Through joining Symbian's Platinum
Partner Program, TI continues its long-standing, strategic cooperation with Symbian as one of the earliest semiconductor companies to use
Symbian OS on its OMAP(TM) platform.
"We are excited to build on our long-term industry-leading collaboration," said Gilles Alain, Vice President, Partnerships and Alliances. "Our
cooperation with TI will continue to drive faster development of 2.5 and 3G converged wireless voice, data and multimedia applications and
services."
"By joining the Symbian Platinum Partner Program, TI continues its close cooperation with Symbian to spur innovations in wireless application
development on Symbian OS and the OMAP platform," said Paul Werp, worldwide director, OMAP marketing, Texas Instruments. "Through
our strategic relationships with industry leaders such as Symbian, TI further demonstrates its commitment to deliver the engines that bring
real-time voice, data and multimedia to wireless handsets."
Today's announcement follows a series of strategic innovations developed by the two companies to enable optimal performance in wireless
handsets based on Symbian OS and TI's industry-adopted OMAP platform which comprises high performance, power-efficient processors, a
robust software infrastructure and comprehensive support network for the rapid development of differentiated 2.5G and 3G
multimedia-enhanced mobile devices and software applications. New mobile devices and software applications based on the Symbian OS and
TI's OMAP platform will include connected systems in a variety of forms that provide data, voice and engaging multimedia experiences
anywhere and anytime.
In an effort to allow wireless application developers and handset manufacturers easy access to more optimized and enriched multimedia
applications and services, Symbian and TI provide a hardware accelerator API on Symbian OS v7.0, delivering complete advantage of the
digital signal processor (DSP)-based OMAP1510 processor.
