The LockDock(TM) Anti-Theft Cradle Opens the Door for Enterprise Acceptance Of PDAs as a Secure Computing Platform

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb 6, 2002 -- Speck Products, a product design and manufacturing company for smart computer accessories, today announced the first PDA security solution that seamlessly locks both the PDA device and data. The LockDock(TM) Anti-Theft Cradle is the only PDA security solution that automatically locks the PDA device and data as soon as it's placed in the cradle and uses a secure password, rather than a cumbersome key for easy unlocking. This means enterprises now have a way to secure what's been previously viewed as a device easily stolen, thus finally making it a secure computing platform that can be approved for sensitive corporate information.

Apart from laptops, PDAs are the most desired item for burglars, identity thieves, and corporate espionage. Often unsecured and simply sitting on top of a desk, these devices are easy to steal and conceal. Since a surprising number of users routinely store passwords, alarm codes, credit card numbers, and other sensitive information in their PDA, it is possible, even easy, to perpetuate crimes including corporate espionage and identify theft using a stolen PDA.

By providing a level of security similar to those on the market for laptop computers, companies will be able to finally start rolling out its coveted enterprise applications to PDAs. "We have enterprise customers saying they want PDA's to have the same level of security as laptops and they want a protective solution that employees can't forget to use," said Tim Hickman, general manager of Speck Products.

The LockDock cradle's patent-pending design provides security for the PDA device and data, as well as providing all normal PDA cradle functions. Since the LockDock automatically secures the PDA as soon as it's placed into the cradle, users don't have to remember to lock it which means security is used every time! Once docked, the PDA can be removed by typing a password code in to the corresponding LockDock software running on the on the PDA. This means no cumbersome key to carry around. The LockDock cradle comes with a security cable allowing it to be secured to a desk leg and the security software provided is able to protect the data even if the PDA were to be chiseled out of the cradle.

The LockDock will be available this spring for the M500, M505 & M125 Palm series and support for other makes and models will follow shortly.
