MessageVine Demonstrates Compatibility With Wireless Village Protocol

Company joins Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and others in creating open standards-based Instant Messaging

LONDON and SAN FRANCISCO -- February 13, 2002 - MessageVine, the premier provider of mobile carrier-class customised instant messaging (IM) solutions, today demonstrated interoperability with the Wireless Village protocol. The initiative, established last April by Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia, aims to define and promote a set of universal specifications for mobile IM and presence services and create a community of supporters.

Today’s demo is part of the Wireless Village effort to create a set of specifications for handset manufacturers and establish a global standard of IM connectivity.

"Wireless IM will become increasingly important in the repertoire of communication modes available to mobile subscribers,” said Ovum analyst Dario Betti. “More specifically, its presence management features can act as a key driver for the migration of users towards the new packet mobile services, such as GPRS and CDMA1X, since these 2.5G services offer communications users, for the first time, the possibility of being truly 'always connected'."

“Actions speak louder than words,” said Eli Efrat, MessageVine’s CEO. “We are very excited to be a part of this important demonstration. We were among the first players to endorse the Wireless Village initiative and are glad to be among the first to implement the protocol.”

MessageVine was recently selected to provide customized IM to Telus Mobility, the prominent Canadian Wireless carrier. This is the first customized wireless Instant Messaging deal announced in North America and highlights the growing potential of this service.

MessageVine provides mobile operators with a highly scalable and customizable server-based IM solution, which allows for seamless communication between different devices including mobile-to-mobile, mobile-to-desktop, and desktop-to-mobile. The MessageVine IM Server is designed to integrate with carrier back-end systems such as SMSCs, billing systems and location servers. MessageVine’s mobile IM technology runs on several platforms including SMS, WAP, i-mode, BREW, J2ME and PocketPC.

“Private-label wireless IM solutions are developing at a rapid pace, which is why setting, and sharing, standards is of vital importance for all players at the earliest stage,” Efrat added. “We are ensuring that operators can rely on open standards IM systems and handsets that include embedded IM capabilities.”

The company's flagship product, MessageVine’s IM Server, is designed to meet the needs of the telecommunications industry by powering IM solutions that are capable of supporting millions of users. Subscribers have complete control over when, how and with whom they choose to communicate with, online and wirelessly.

Additionally, MessageVine is active in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), working on creating standards and interoperability between desktop IM clients.
