CDMA2000 1X 3G Network Innovation The Technology Behind the News

URL(s): www.cdg.org

Bell Mobility announced today the commercial launch of the first nationwide CDMA2000 1X wireless network. Nortel Networks provides the entire core, radio and access technology for this network build. Nortel Networks industry-leading CDMA technology can essentially double Bell Mobility's voice capacity and allow them to provide 'always on' media-rich applications at data speeds up to ten times faster than previously available.

Today's announcement is proof that 3G wireless is happening in North America and will revolutionize the way businesses and consumers communicate. According to Nortel Networks, faster speeds, more advanced devices and user-friendly and personalized applications/services will accelerate adoption of wireless data.

This extends a long-standing relationship between Nortel Networks and Bell Mobility. In August 2001, Nortel Networks was awarded an estimated US$117 million ($180 Cdn) contract to build Bell Mobility's digital PCS network into Western Canada (Alberta and British Columbia), using CDMA2000 1X infrastructure. During this time, Bell Mobility and Nortel Networks performed live CDMA 2000 1X voice and data calls and demonstrated web browsing, email with attachments and live streaming video. This winning collaboration - a global wireless infrastructure and communications leader and Canada's most innovative wireless operator - unleashes the potential of next-generation wireless data and delivers 'always on' wireless services to end users.

What is CDMA2000 1X?

CDMA2000 1X is 3G technology which offers two times increase in voice capacity and provides data speeds up to 307 kbps on a single (1.25 MHz, or 1X) carrier in new or existing spectrum. CDMA2000 1X is has been commercially available since October 2000.To learn more about CDMA2000, visit the CDG website at www.cdg.org.
