Trimble and ESRI Form Strategic Alliance for Mobile GIS Solutions
URL(s): www.esri.com; www.trimble.com
Sunnyvale, California, and Redlands, California-Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) and
ESRI announced today that they have formed a strategic alliance to work on mobile
geographic information system (GIS) solutions.
The alliance brings together Trimble's expertise in field-rugged handheld global positioning system (GPS) technology and ESRI's market-leading GIS software to expand
the power of an enterprise GIS to organizations' mobile workers.
Mobile GIS
Mobile GIS addresses the needs of field inspectors, maintenance teams, utility crews,
emergency repair workers, and many other field-workers who require timely access to
enterprise GIS data in the field. Mobile GIS integrates GPS technology, portable
hardware, and GIS software. To facilitate information to and from the field, these
innovative solutions will leverage advances in wireless technology and the Internet. With
mobile GIS, databases become directly accessible to field-based personnel whenever and
wherever information is needed.
"In the past, companies were content just knowing their resources were 'out there,' in
the field," said Alan Townsend, vice president and general manager of Trimble's
mapping and GIS business segment. "Today the convergence of technology allows
organizations to achieve greater operating efficiencies by knowing where every part of
their enterprise is, in real time. Mobile GIS makes this happen by linking the office and
field."
"We believe that by leveraging Trimble's expertise in the field, our users will be
provided with more options and new mobile solutions," said Jack Dangermond, president
of ESRI. "This strategic alliance will also further expand the role of the mobile client in
an organization's GIS enterprise environment."
