Cambridge Positioning Systems and Siemens to co-operate on location solutions

The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC Mobile) and Cambridge Positioning Systems (CPS) today announced that the companies will co-operate to support Siemens IC Mobile's development of mobile location solutions for North America. The five-year deal will involve CPS licensing its innovative Cursor software to accurately locate mobile phone handsets within mobile networks.

Siemens IC Mobile will integrate the Cursor software into its mobile network product portfolio which is used by mobile operators to rollout mobile location services. As part of the cooperation, CPS will also provide E-OTD software integration for Siemens handsets via its recently opened integration facility in Cambridge. This will enable Siemens to rollout E-OTD enabled location-based network equipment and handsets to the growing US and other worldwide markets. The Cursor software utilizes the E-OTD (Enhanced Observed Time Difference) technology that offers GSM operators accuracy to within 100 meters - in line with the E-911 mandate by the U.S. FCC requiring location-enabled networks to be deployed.

"This is a major development for CPS. The licensing agreement is hugely significant for the profile of E-OTD technology as the high accuracy, cost effective solution for mobile location, " said Chris Wade, Chief Executive of CPS. "Importantly, it also marks the first stage in what we hope will be a long-term relationship with Siemens IC Mobile - and we look forward to partnering a major global player in this exciting new market."

"This cooperation sends a very positive signal to the US market and beyond - that mobile location is happening right now using the powerful experience and knowledge from both Siemens IC Mobile and CPS, " said Lothar Pauly, board member of the Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group. "In terms of personal safety, mobile phone users will shortly have the reassurance of high accuracy mobile location services."

The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC Mobile) offers the complete range of mobile solutions including mobile devices, infrastructure and applications. Devices include mobile phones, wireless modules, mobile organizers and cordless phones as well as products for wireless home networks. The infrastructure portfolio includes GSM, GPRS and 3G mobile network technologies from base stations and switching systems to intelligent networks, e.g. for prepaid services. Mobile Applications cover end-to-end solutions for Messaging, Location Based Services or Mobile Payment. For the fiscal year 2001 (September 30), IC Mobile recorded sales of EUR 11.3 billion and employed 30,730 people worldwide. Cambridge Positioning Systems

Cambridge Positioning Systems Limited (CPS) develops and licenses its Cursorä E-OTD (Enhanced Observed Time Difference) system to handset manufacturers and network equipment vendors. The company is working with, or has licensed its technology to Ericsson, Nortel Networks, Siemens and Lucent Technologies. Cursorä delivers high accuracy mobile location technology - up to 50 metres on GSM networks, with even greater accuracy predicted on 3G networks. CPS has conducted successful trials of the Cursorä system in the UK, North America, Asia Pacific and Europe.

From October 2001 in the US, the Federal Communications Commission has mandated that all calls from mobile phones to emergency services be accompanied by highly accurate information about the location of a caller. This ruling known as E-911 will provide significant opportunities for CPS' highly accurate location technology as E-OTD emerges as the preferred choice to fulfil the FCC's regulation.
