New Location-Based Services Demonstration Showcases ESRI GIS and Tele Atlas Map Data
Innovative Presentation to Be Unveiled at CTIA Conference
Redlands, California—ESRI and Tele Atlas North America, Inc. have completed a new demonstration that wirelessly accesses web-based data for a location-based services (LBS) solution. The demonstration, built around ESRI’s geographic information system (GIS) technology and Tele Atlas map data, will be unveiled at the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) Conference. CTIA will be held March 18–20, 2002, in the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.
The LBS demonstration is a conceptual example of how LBS companies can use ESRI's Geography Network (www.geographynetwork.com) with Tele Atlas data to enable their wireless services. In the demo, as in real life, a wireless device—be it a PDA, phone, pager, onboard car navigation system, or wireless Web-enabled laptop—sends a query to a back office application. The user of the wireless device can send a request such as “find the shortest route to an address,” or “find all gas stations in a 10-mile radius.” Based on the location of the device, Tele Atlas data attributes are summoned by ESRI technology, and a list of requested services is provided along with a detailed route.
"Location-based services represent a growing market that will redefine how people receive information instantly,” says Jon Spinney, location-based services industry manager, ESRI. “Combining GIS, mobile devices, and networks with highly accurate map and tabular data allows for a wealth of new opportunities to provide consumers with easy-to-use services wherever they are. The ESRI and Tele Atlas demonstration will give CTIA Conference attendees a look at what is taking place now and into the future within a GIS Web services context.”
“Tele Atlas map data is the ideal data set for LBS applications, and ESRI tools are a must for today’s location-sensitive companies and applications,” says Kiyoshi Hamai, vice president/general manager LBS, Tele Atlas North America. “This new LBS demo emphasizes the continued commitment to the U.S. market by ESRI and Tele Atlas.”
Tele Atlas data contains coverage, accuracy, and features required for location-dependent applications that enable the user to route to/from a destination or to physically represent location on a map based on its address. ESRI’s routing, mapping, spatial query, and visualization technology combined with Tele Atlas’ highly accurate global digital map data offers businesses the means to rapidly develop and deploy advanced LBS applications in the United States and across Europe.
ESRI GIS technology is used today by organizations as the back-end routing and mapping technology that drives these services while Tele Atlas data provides the map data content. ESRI and Tele Atlas are working together closely to offer optimized solutions for many diverse marketplaces.
