Motorola Launches Mobile Services Cafe(TM) Download Server with J2ME(TM) Technology for North America
New Carrier Grade Server Brings JAVA(TM) Capabilities to GSM, CDMA and TDMA Networks
SAN FRANCISCO, Mar 25, 2002 - Motorola (NYSE: MOT) today announced the launch of its Mobile Services Cafe (MSC)
Download Server with J2ME technology, an integral part of a robust end-to-end JAVA solution that promotes deployment of mobile services by supporting applications
from multiple developer communities and manufacturers.
The J2ME Download Server by Motorola is part of a unique end-to-end solution that combines JAVA toolkits, servers and devices embedded with J2ME. It will support
over-the-air recommended practices, provide reliable interactions for users to download content over the air, and make new content available to users immediately upon
the content being provisioned.
A carrier-grade solution that is easily integrated into digital networks, the J2ME Download Server by Motorola will deliver popular applications and content to any
handset. Currently, Motorola offers its customers one of the largest J2ME technology enabled handset portfolios with more than 12 handset models and over 100
applications with content from multiple providers -- including the new Motorola downloadable mobile phone game "Andretti Racing," featured at last week's CTIA trade
show.
The server also offers carriers the ability to confirm content compatibility on users' devices before content is downloaded, provide transaction logs for all events, track
content that has been purchased and generate reports. Key benefits of the server include:
* Support of MIDP 1.0 OTA compliant mobile devices running J2ME
applications
* M-services compliant, end-to-end Java solution
The J2ME Download Server by Motorola is part of its new Mobile Services Cafe solution, a suite of software-based services and applications -- supported by the
necessary middleware, architecture and third party content -- designed to allow operators to quickly commercialize a variety of wireless data services under their brands.
It enables operators to offer mobile consumers a selection of customizable content and services that help transform any Internet-ready mobile device into an "extension"
of the user's personality and preferences.
"The launch of the J2ME Download Server by Motorola showcases our commitment to creating an expansive J2ME application library, as well as the products that will
support them," said Mike Bordelon, corporate vice president and general manager of the Internet Software and Content Group in Motorola's Personal Communications
Sector.
"Motorola was the first manufacturer to introduce J2ME handsets to the United States, and continues to lead the way for J2ME technology," Bordelon said. "With the
launch of this server, Motorola can build on the strengths of its past commercial deployments and its existing infrastructure to support the largest number of active users
in North America."
mmO2 (formerly British Telecom) is the first operator to trial the Download Server with J2ME technology. The mmO2 unit set up to launch externally developed
applications over its networks, is currently offering elements of Mobile Services Cafe's infotainment platform. The Download Server, a key part of the Mobile Services
Cafe solution, will eventually enable mmO2 to deploy a wide portfolio of SMS, WAP and J2ME wireless games content, as well as M-Services downloads to its
customers.
