Nextel Unveils Java-based Business and Entertainment Applications
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March 25, 2002, Nextel Communications, Inc. today
announced several new Java-based business and entertainment applications.
These applications demonstrate the power of the Nextel Java platform for
bringing to market wireless solutions and content that boost productivity
for business and provide entertainment to consumers.
"The Nextel 2.5G nationwide network today supports a diverse set of
advanced Java applications - from complex business solutions to wireless
games ? that appeal to a range of customer segments," said Greg Santoro,
vice president of Internet and Wireless Services at Nextel. "Our developer
program is an essential component in bringing these applications to market.
By providing development assistance, certification, marketing, distribution
and billing services to partners, developers can concentrate on what they
do best ? create innovative applications that leverage the best of Java
and mobility."
New Java Applications
The new applications complement Nextel's existing Java applications and
include application developers:
Digital Cyclone with its My-Cast personalized weather forecast application.
My-Cast provides current conditions, a nine-hour and seven-day forecast,
severe weather alerts and animated Doppler radar centered on your location
of interest, using patent pending technology. My-Cast creates the current
day's forecast by combining a proprietary, high-resolution weather
forecasting system with National Weather Service data and updating the
information every three hours.
HillCast Technologies with its MidCast V1 financial application that
streams continuous, real-time financial market information to Nextel
Internet-ready phones. The information includes stock prices, price
changes, volumes, sizes of last trades, highs, lows, the day's open and
other stock data. Users can determine the information format, including
Level II data and real-time plot charts, which adjust dynamically as the
market fluctuates.
Powerful Partnerships
Nextel also has teamed with a number of leading games developers including:
Cybiko, which offers a variety of game applications, including Blazing
Boards (a single player sport game), Dice Extreme (a game of chance and
logic), Funny Balls (a game of logic and observation for a single player),
Mens Room (an action game of skill and marksmanship), and PhatCash (a
single player logic game).
THQ, which offers a host of game applications, including Astrosmash (a
classic Intellivision game from the 1980s), MotoGP (a single player
motorcycle racing game), Snood (a single player puzzle game), and WWF
Mobile Madness (a mobile wrestling game).
