-SEGA offers limited-time downloading opportunity for demo software-

PalmSource Japan Forum 2002 Tokyo, Japan-March 28. 2002 - Metrowerks today announced that Palm OS software demonstrated by SEGA CORPORATION at PalmSource Japan Forum 2002 was developed using Metrowerks’ CodeWarrior tools. This software, demonstrated on the evaluation board by SEGA, is developed for next generation Palm Powered devices, based on Motorola’s Dragonball MX1. SEGA will let the users download this demo games software free from their web site (http://pda.sega.co.jp/).

On February 6, 2002, SEGA CORPORATION, Metrowerks, and Motorola announced plans to develop SEGA game software for next generation Palm Powered devices. By teaming up with one another, SEGA will issue to the developer its license for mobile game API, and Metrowerks will release the CodeWarrior IDE (Integrated Development Environment), including SEGA’s API, targeting for next generation Palm Handhelds. This partnership should bring more game software to market for next generation Palm Handhelds, and SEGA’s demo at PalmSource Japan has indicated great growth potential for mobile game software.

For PalmSource Japan Forum 2002, SEGA CORPORATION has developed the demo software for the Keynote, “Borkov” and “Triangle Magic”. The demo software for the Keynote was developed using 3D operation and texture mapping technology, showing various polygons. This demo software is not game software, rather it was developed to validate the performance with 66MHz-CPU, and to check and search what will be required for next generation Palm Powered devices.

“Borkov” is a puzzle game that the player moves Mr.Borkov and delete the Player's Blocks, or rotate them as shown in the Goal Image.

“Triangle Magic” is the game to lead the ball to the goal cell while collecting all the coins on the way.

The software was developed by one of SEGA’s development teams. “Smilebit”, “Borkov” and “Triangle Magic” will be downloadable only from March 28th to April 30th for free at SEGA’s temporary site(http://pda.sega.co.jp/).

CodeWarrior for Palm OS has become a de facto standard tool for developing Palm OS applications, and holds 80% of that market, according to Gartner Group. The release of CodeWarrior Development Tools for Palm OS will enable developers to start developing applications for next generation Palm Handhelds at ease.

According to SEGA CORPORATION’S development team: “3D is not absolutely necessary for games, but with this game demo, we used 3D technique to challenge to develop something complicated that runs on the device with much increased speed. We are positive that a faster compiler will be developed to let us create the software smoothly.”

“When a new platform is born, developing and delivering a good quality software to the market is an important factor to drum up the business,” said Shoji Ueda, president, Metrowerks Japan. “I think SEGA’s demo software has shown a possible path for developing game software for next generation Palm Handhelds. In order to deliver a critical mass of software to the market, developers need a flexible development environment tailored to their needs. And it is our commitment to support and provide them with those tools.”
