Toshiba ASSP Business Unit Shares Platform Strategy, Unveils Key New Products

Range of Platforms and Products for Many Vertical Market Segments on Display at the Embedded Systems Conference

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 22 - Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)* today disclosed details of the Application Specific Standard Products (ASSP) Business Unit's platform-based strategy for various key market segments, including home appliances, digital consumer, wireless, mobile, etc. Building on that strategy, TAEC will demonstrate a number of platforms and end products incorporating several new products and other components from Toshiba's vast product portfolio at the Embedded Systems Conference held in San Francisco this week.

"Over the past several months, the ASSP Business Unit has been successfully pursuing its platform-based strategy," said Farhad Mafie, vice president of the ASSP Business Unit at TAEC. "When polled, our customers told us that they want us to provide complete hardware and software platforms for our standard products. For new product development, we work with many of our customers as technology partners from the design concept through the production phase. Sometimes this consists of doing the entire platform development for them and at times we jointly develop a specific platform for a particular application. We are showing several working examples of this approach at the Embedded Systems Conference this week."

"These platforms and end products for a wide range of applications serve as proof points of our capabilities. They show our customers that we have unmatched product breadth, in-house hardware and software expertise, access to industry standard tools and software, and the system-level understanding to participate in our customers' design and development activities at various levels. To guarantee customer success, we use standard open source software as much as possible," said Farhad Mafie.

As part of this platform strategy, the company is demonstrating the following:

-- A platform for the home appliance segment. This washing machine platform uses a Toshiba TMP88PS43 microcontroller, a Toshiba MIG10J503H intelligent power module, and many other Toshiba logic and discrete components. Toshiba Model 15 tools were used for embedded software development.

-- A platform for the automotive segment. This demonstration shows how various functions throughout an automobile can be supported using a Toshiba microcontroller with a built-in CAN interface.

-- Two platforms for the industrial control segment:

-- A wireless-controlled robot uses Toshiba's new 2.4 gigahertz low-power transceivers (see separate news release) and many other Toshiba components, including microcontrollers, motor drivers, glue logic and discrete components.

-- A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) platform shows how Toshiba RFID technology is used in badges and interfacing systems. Various Toshiba technologies, including the T6N81 tag and T6N71 reader/writer integrated circuits, are embedded in these devices.

-- Several platforms and end products for the mobile/wireless market:

-- A Toshiba CDMA One-enabled cellular phone that uses Toshiba MPEG-4 technology as well as Toshiba microprocessors, embedded DRAM, discrete components, batteries, etc. The Toshiba single- chip MPEG-4 decoder allows the cell phone to receive and display MPEG-4 video and audio, representative of the value- added, advanced 2.5G and 3G cellular services planned by cell phone carriers.

-- A PDA reference design using Toshiba's TC6387 Secure Digital Hose Controller (SDHC). This demo features the Secure Digital I/O capabilities of Toshiba SDHCs in an existing IBM PDA.

-- Bluetooth(TM) system solutions showing Toshiba Bluetooth technology interfacing to several PDA and laptop PCs.

-- Several platforms for the digital consumer market:

-- A digital still camera and a digital video camera using Toshiba's new TMP1962 MIPS-based RISC processor (see separate news release) and many other complementary Toshiba components.

-- An integrated high definition (HD) TV system platform for terrestrial, cable and satellite applications as well as new, emerging HD applications. This features Toshiba's new TC81240TBG HD digital multimedia decoder (see separate news release).

-- A remote keyless entry system that uses Toshiba's new TA31275N AM/FM radio frequency/intermediate frequency receiver (see separate news release) in a low-power, wireless system. Such devices also find application in other vertical segments such as the automotive segment.

-- An electronic organizer and dictionary based on Toshiba's TMP92CH21 microcontroller.
