Lincoln, Neb. Fire Department Gains Instant Access To Emergency Data With Aether PacketCluster Rescue Mobile Communications Software
OWINGS MILLS, Md.-- April 22, 2003 -- Aether Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:AETH), a leading provider of wireless and mobile data solutions, today announced that Lincoln Fire and Rescue (LFR) in Lincoln, Neb. plans to equip its fire and rescue vehicles with Aether PacketCluster(R) Rescue(TM) wireless information software.
PacketCluster Rescue provides emergency service personnel with remote access to critical data instantly and securely, using a laptop computer. LFR will equip its front line vehicles, pumpers, ladders, engines and ambulances with Aether technology.
PacketCluster Rescue extends computer-aided dispatch (CAD), fire records management systems (RMS) and other in-house data sources to a mobile environment on a laptop computer. The system improves communication between rescue companies by enabling the exchange of messages and data in real time, allowing for faster deployment and more effective decision-making.
LFR is responsible for ambulance and paramedic response within the city of Lincoln and surrounding Lancaster County, an area with a combined population of 245,000. With PacketCluster Rescue, LFR personnel on the scene of an emergency can use laptop computers in their vehicles to access the Directions, Hazards, Premise, Temp Situation (DHPT) database located on the central 911 CAD system.
"In an emergency, where every moment counts, instant access to pre-fire plans, hazmat data and other critical information can help us get the situation under control faster, which can save lives," said Fire Chief Mike Spadt. "PacketCluster Rescue will also permit on-scene data collection and reporting for incident documentation and future planning and training."
PacketCluster Rescue will help LFR to better manage dispatch functions by augmenting traditional voice dispatch with secure, silent dispatch and instant messaging. In addition, rescue personnel will also be able to file incident reports and manage information, databases and maps via a user-friendly laptop interface.
PacketCluster Rescue is part of a suite of mobile public safety products from the mobile government division of Aether Systems. Aether Packet Cluster Patrol provides police with mobile access to local, state and federal criminal and motor vehicle databases.
The Lincoln Police, Lancaster County Sheriff, and Nebraska State Patrol have been using Aether PacketCluster Patrol since 1999 and currently have more than 180 units in operation.
"Instrumental in our decision was seeing how well PacketCluster Patrol for law enforcement has performed," said Spadt. "The fact that PacketCluster has a user-friendly interface and is compatible with our existing back office systems is making the implementation very easy."
"PacketCluster Rescue empowers both dispatch and on-scene personnel with secure, instant access to information to help them better manage emergency situations," said John Dorr, vice president of marketing for Aether's mobile government division. "Through the positive experience of the Lincoln Police with Aether's PacketCluster Patrol, Lincoln Fire and Rescue has seen proof of the ability of mobile data and wireless communications to enhance public safety."
