Symbian and America Online Team up to Provide Mobile Media, Messaging and Entertainment Services for Symbian OS Smartphones
America Online Joins Symbian Platinum Program
LONDON & DULLES, Va.--April 24, 2003--Symbian and America Online Inc., today announced that America Online has joined Symbian's Platinum Program. As a Symbian Platinum partner, America Online, the world's leading interactive services company, is able to develop its wireless instant messaging services -- AOL(R) Instant Messenger(TM) and ICQ(R) - as well as its leading predictive text input software, T9(R) Text Input, for Symbian OS(TM) mobile phones. In addition, America Online will have the ability to develop content-based services and applications for Symbian OS.
Symbian OS, the open global industry standard operating system for advanced mobile phones, is licensed by the world's leading handset manufacturers including Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Siemens and Sony Ericsson.
"By becoming a Symbian Platinum Partner, we can more easily and effectively deploy a broad range of media and entertainment content to Symbian licensees who manufacture over 75 per cent of the world's mobile phones sold today," said Bill Schwebel, Vice President and General Manager of AOL Mobile. "In addition, we are excited at the opportunity to provide greater wireless access to AIM and ICQ via this partnership, creating even greater opportunities for our users to take their instant messaging experience mobile."
Gilles Allain, Symbian's vice president of Partnerships and Alliances, said, "More and more individuals are not only using wireless phones for communication purposes but also for entertainment and information gathering while on the go. With America Online on board as a Symbian Platinum Partner, we are providing access to leading content from established brands as well as two of the leading and most active instant messaging communities in the world."
AIM and ICQ mobile products allow wireless subscribers to access their list of contacts on their phone, see who is online and available to chat at any given moment, search for new or old friends and send and receive messages.
T9 Text Input software, or "predictive text input," enables the use of wireless communication services such as SMS (short messaging service), mobile instant messaging and e-mail by making it quick and easy for consumers to enter text and characters into their wireless phone using just one key press per letter.
America Online is also a leading provider of online content and information including news, driving directions, and local event and entertainment information via its popular brands, including MapQuest and Moviefone.
