Anyka Releases MobileFlash(R) for QUALCOMM's BREW(TM) Platform
Mobile Multimedia Application Developed for BREW-Enabled Handsets
GUANGZHOU, China, April 30 - Anyka (Guangzhou) Software
Technology Co., Ltd., a leading application developer focusing on mobile
multimedia development, today announced the launch of MobileFlash, a
multimedia technology for QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for
Wireless(TM) (BREW) platform.
"The BREW platform allows end users to enjoy a faster and more powerful
performance of applications written native to BREW in C/C++. BREW also
enables us to keep improving the compression ratio while maintaining and
optimizing visual and audio performance," said Wan Xiang, Ph. D., general
manager of Anyka. "One of the significant features of MobileFlash is its low
complexity, which is important for mobile devices because their CPU has very
limited resources due to power consumption. Efficient algorithms that work
well in the wired world or in desktop computing may not be suitable for mobile
multimedia applications. MobileFlash makes a good balance between compression
ratio, complexity, and animation quality."
"MobileFlash is a great addition to the list of BREW applications being
developed in China," said Jing Wang, senior vice president of QUALCOMM and
chairman of QUALCOMM China. "Anyka is bringing popular, compelling content to
BREW-enabled mobile devices so that users can enjoy it anytime, anywhere. We
are very pleased to be working with a company dedicated to providing consumers
with a new generation of mobile multimedia products."
MobileFlash is a new type of video compression/decompression format that
can convert popular Macromedia Flash(TM) content to be played on mobile
phones. Comparable with the current animation technology, it is designed to
be thin and meet the special needs of mobile devices, supporting smaller
files, lower complexity, and better multimedia effects. MobileFlash supports
16, 256, and 4096 colors and incorporates MIDI as the background music,
optimizing the synchronization of animation, text and music. In addition, by
providing a transcoding tool to convert AVI, MPEG and Macromedia Flash content
popularly available over the Internet, MobileFlash can easily access a huge
volume of pre-existing content.
China Unicom has joined Verizon Wireless and ALLTEL in the United States,
KTF in South Korea, KDDI in Japan, VIVO (the joint venture between Telefonica
Moviles and Portugal Telecom in Brazil) and Telstra in Australia, in
commercializing BREW-based services. More than 50 BREW-enabled handset models
are already available to consumers worldwide and more than 40 device
manufacturers have indicated their interest in the BREW platform.
In August 2002, China Unicom announced its plans to launch BREW-enabled
services in the first half of 2003. On February 26, 2003, China Unicom and
QUALCOMM announced that they had established a joint venture to foster the
development of a domestic BREW developer community in China. The newly formed
joint venture, Unicom-BREW Telecommunication Technologies Co. Ltd., will
provide Chinese developers technical support and training on QUALCOMM's BREW
mobile data platform. The BREW solution creates a global marketplace for
application developers, enabling them to distribute their wireless content to
BREW operators around the world.
About BREW
QUALCOMM's BREW solution is a complete product and business system for the
development and over-the-air deployment of data services on wireless devices.
The BREW solution provides the necessary tools and value-added services to
developers, device manufacturers and wireless operators for application
development and distribution, device configuration and billing and payment.
