Cognima secures Symbian based UIQ and Series 60 phones

Symbian Exposium - London, UK – Cognima today announces that it has ported its Cognima Replicate solution to both major platforms for Symbian OS™.

Addressing a key need for simple, non-intrusive data protection for mobile phones, Cognima Replicate protects people’s data and settings on mobile phones. Cognima’s technology enables instantaneous and completely automatic replication of phone data and settings through the wireless network to a secure server.

"We’re delivering Cognima’s solution to the widest possible user base by focusing on the key phones and platforms that are driving the mobile phone market,” said Simon East, CEO Cognima. “Symbian have established a strong lead in the emerging European smartphone market, and we’re looking to build on this success to port Cognima Replicate to all Symbian OS phones.”

Recent published research from Canalys estimates that phones based on Symbian OS accounted for 91% of all featurephones and smartphones in the EMEA region in Q1, 2003. Cognima Replicate is now supported on all the currently shipping Symbian OS based phones in Europe: the Nokia 7650 and 3650 phones, both of which use the Nokia Series 60 platform, and the Ericsson P800 phone which uses the UIQ platform.

“Having completed the port for Symbian OS and customised Cognima Replicate for Series 60 phones, it took our engineers only one day to complete the basic port of our solution to the UIQ platform” added Ralph Greenwell, VP Engineering, Cognima.

"The underlying architecture of Symbian OS was designed to allow rapid development of a wide range of solutions and services for Symbian OS licensees and their customers - the network operators and ultimately mobile phone users,” said Martin Coul, Technology Partner Program Director, Symbian. “Cognima have taken advantage of this, and having completed the initial port of their solution to Symbian OS, were able to optimise Cognima Replicate for some of Europes best selling smart phones in a matter of days.”

Cognima are demonstrating Cognima Replicate running on the Nokia 7650, Nokia 3650 and Ercisson P800 phones at the Symbian Exposium, which is being held April 29th and 30th at the ExCel Centre, London, UK.

About Cognima Replicate

Cognima’s data replication technology was designed with a focus on reliability, minimal phone ROM footprint and cost-effectiveness. The client software in the phone is written in highly optimised C++ and takes up only 70KB of ROM footprint. The server software is designed for integration with external systems through the use standard technologies such as J2EE, and runs on industry standard server platforms for carrier grade availability and scalability. The back-end database is built around Oracle 9i.
