Java and BREW-based applications present the biggest opportunity for profit
01/05/2003 - SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA. The global wireless market is preparing
itself for a new round of growth, according to a new report released by The
Research Room - Opportunities for Profit in a Wireless World.
With the recent confusion and disappointment in most things wireless, the opportunities for companies to make profits are returning - with user spend
set to pick up both in the business and consumer world.
"With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies becoming embedded in many new PCs and
devices, and the mobile and wireless network operators actually beginning to
focus on what's happening today and tomorrow - not five years down the
track, the opportunities for growth have rarely been so good," said Tim
Sheedy, Managing Director of The Research Room. "Previous rumours of
wireless growth have generally been based on nothing but hype and hot air -
but with the new-found focus on delivering what the consumer actually wants,
the future is looking good for a whole range of wireless and mobile product,
service and solution providers."
The new report by The Research Room focuses on the opportunities in the
wireless and mobile markets in the next 3-5 years. The following wireless
solutions are discussed:
- public mobile services (i.e. GSM, CDMA etc)
- public access and private mobile radio services (i.e. TETRA & TETRAPOL)
- wireless Local Area Networks (Wi-Fi)
- wireless Wide Area Networks (i.e. point-to-point microwave)
- wireless Personal Areas Networks (Bluetooth)
- satellite
- wireless local loop
Opportunities in hardware, software, services and content are discussed for
most of the technologies, and each opportunity discussed is given a score
for both existing providers and new entrants based on a number of
categories.
The top five opportunities for new entrants to the mobile and wireless
markets are:
1. Java/BREW-based applications
2. Mobile gaming software - games
3. WLAN solutions providers
4. MMS content
5. Wi-Fi connectivity/account management software
And the top five opportunities for the existing providers of mobile and
wireless solutions are:
1. Mobile gaming software - games
2. Java/BREW-based applications
3. WLAN solutions providers 4. Mobile operator services
5. MMS content
There is still much room for growth in the wireless market - and there will
continue to be many niche markets that grow wildly and more mainstream
markets than disappoint. But based on today's market conditions and those
forecast for the future, these markets are the ones that are most likely to
bear fruit - and return a good investment for many companies in the market.
