A Wireless Entertainment First: GoComics brings “GARFIELD”--Most Popular Comic Strip in Print -- Live to Mobile Handsets
-- GoComics application soon available through Sprint and Verizon Wireless Networks --
Kansas City, Mo. (May 1, 2003) -- uclick and PaletSoft, Inc. announce GoComics, a first-of-its kind- wireless application, developed to deliver a daily dose of “GARFIELD” and other favorite strips to mobile phone customers. Until now, entire strips of current/daily comics have not been available to mobile phone customers. The agreement, a global first for the wireless entertainment industry, includes delivery of daily strips (Monday - Saturday) and a “Best of GARFIELD” on Sunday. US wireless carriers are the first to offer the GoComics application, however international agreements are under discussion. To access a demo of GoComics visit www.paletsoft.com.
GoComics is available--in full color--for Verizon Wireless and PCS Vision subscribers. The GoComics entertainment application requires a software download and a small monthly access fee from the wireless carrier. Four additional strips, as created daily by their original artists, will also be available to PCS Vision customers including: “Fox Trot,” “Stone Soup,” “The Duplex,” and “Red & Rover.”
The GoComics collaboration merges talents from both the print and technology worlds in a David and Goliath-like manner. Virtually unknown entertainment software application developer, PaletSoft, brought the idea, tools and programming expertise needed to translate data into the required user-friendly mobile format. Already the largest packager and distributor of comics and word games on the Web, uclick, offered the biggest selection of syndicated comic strips possible for GoComics. (Founded in 1996, uclick is the digital division of Andrews McMeel Universal--a company that also includes Universal Press Syndicate and Andrews McMeel Publishing.) Working together, PaletSoft and uclick created GoComics - and mobile access to comic strips was born.
“The idea for a daily comic strip application came after traveling abroad. I couldn’t access GARFIELD and missed my daily chuckle,” said Mark Weber, CEO for PaletSoft. “We approached uclick. They understood the market potential for a comic-based application--giving us the right combination of people, talents and top resources to make it happen.”
GoComics offers wireless customers the globally syndicated favorite, “GARFIELD,” as it appears daily in 2,570 papers globally -- but in full color -- and without having to hunt down a newspaper. uclick chose GARFIELD as the “strip of choice” as it is the most syndicated comic strip in the world. GARFIELD is read by more than 263 million readers daily, in 63 countries and 23 languages.
“Comics have an ageless appeal. This is GARFIELD’s 25th birthday, and with technology changing so much over those years, it only makes sense to introduce a new way for our on-the-go readers to access the crafty cat," says Aaron Kirby, marketing & sales manager, uclick.
About GARFIELD
Fat, Lazy, and Lovable...GARFIELD says and does the things that people would like to say and do -- if only they could. People relate to GARFIELD because GARFIELD IS them. GARFIELD loves TV and hates Mondays. He'd rather pig out than work out; in fact, his passion for food and sleep is matched only by his aversion to diet and exercise. GARFIELD is provided by PAWS, Inc.
