Bango Fingerprint matches sophistication of the PC world to deliver personalised mobile services
The Mobile Internet has just got personal
7 May 2003 - Content providers can now deliver personalised revenue generating services
to mobile phone users thanks to the Bango Fingerprint launched today by
Bango.net. The Bango Fingerprint provides a way to uniquely identify mobile
users visiting a mobile site. Content providers can improve the user
experience by recognising returning users and providing them more relevant
content or services. The unique identity can be used to authenticate users
and maintain important facilities such as shopping baskets.
"The addition of cookies to Web browsers enabled sites to provide better
user experiences, reducing the need for logins and enabling sites to be
tailored to users," said Ray Anderson, CEO of Bango.net. "The Bango
Fingerprint brings these benefits to mobile sites where they are even more
important because of the phone's small screen and the more personal nature
of the mobile experience."
Protecting privacy but enabling identification
A physical fingerprint is unique to each person but does not reveal the
user's identity unless the person decided to give you his or her identity
information. Similarly, Bango provides a digital fingerprint that does not
reveal the user's phone number or name. This enables content providers to
deliver personalised services without violating Data Protection laws. Users
can be certain they will not be "spammed" or identified by content providers
they may not want to disclose information to.
Additional anti-fraud protection is enabled with the Bango Fingerprint
through security tokens. The content provider can verify a user's
fingerprint. This stops anyone from trying to avoid payment. Fraud over
the air is prevented because the content provider double-checks that the
security token came from Bango.
Phunkyphones launches with Bango Fingerprint
Phunkyphones, providers of polyphonic ringtones for today's colour phones,
were so pleased at the ease and speed with which they were able to monetise
their site with the Bango Fingerprint that they are now selling a total
mobile experience on the same day as the Fingerprint service goes live.
"We were blown away with how easy it was to implement the Bango
Fingerprint," said Adam Strange, Business Development Manager. "By texting
go phunky to 89080 (message costs £1.50), people can choose from our
selection of 2,500 polyphonic ringtones, then buy and download all from
their mobile."
Coinciding with the release of Bango Fingerprint, Bango now requires all
content providers to rate their content in either "U" or "R" categories.
Content tagged as "U" is acceptable for a universal audience while "R" rated
content has restricted access because the material is of a sexual or violent
nature. Parents can bar a mobile phone from accessing any "R" rated content
by texting "go bar" to 89080 (message costs £1.50) or visiting 227 from the
phone they wish to bar.
