PCTEL Unveils Soft Access Point for Wi-Fi Networks

Segue SAM Disrupts Current Price Points For Wi-Fi Networks

CHICAGO--May 7, 2003--PCTEL, Inc. (Nasdaq:PCTI), a leading provider of Internet access products, 802.11 mobility software, and software-defined radio products announced today the Segue(TM)SAM, a Soft Access point Module for Wi-Fi(TM) networks. The Segue(TM)SAM permits Wi-Fi enabled notebook or desktop PC's to function as a Wi-Fi access point and router. The approach leverages a standard ethernet connection to the notebook or PC. "This breakthrough creates the same type of cost discontinuity that PCTEL pioneered with soft modems," said Marty Singer, PCTEL's Chairman and CEO. "Our traditional strength is exploiting opportunities to eliminate hardware and replace it with software. Our Host Signal Processing (HSP) modem and soft DSL accomplished this for wired access. We are now applying our core competency to wireless access," added Singer.

With the Segue(TM)SAM, any location that has wired broadband access can be instantly converted to a Wireless Broadband network simply by using a PC equipped with a WLAN client card. There is no need to have an external wireless router or access point. There are instant applications for this in homes as well as conference rooms where multiple people have a need to share broadband access. The Segue(TM)SAM Technology, or "soft AP", will facilitate the rapid and viral growth of Wi-Fi networks by lowering the costs of establishing WLAN's.

The Segue(TM)SAM will be delivered as a bundled solution from the manufacturers of retail 802.11 client adapters, licensed to 802.11 chipset suppliers and motherboard manufacturers as a value added option, or licensed for distribution to wire line broadband service providers as part of their home networking solution. The Segue(TM) SAM will be commercially available starting in Q3, 2003.
