QUALCOMM Congratulates China Unicom on Its Rollout of Value-Added Services in Guangdong and Shanghai
Launch to Bring BREW(TM)-Based Wireless Data Services
to Prosperous South Region
BEIJING, May 19 -
QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code
Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, congratulates
China Unicom (NYSE: CHU) on launching commercial BREW-enabled services in the
Guangdong and Shanghai provinces. Unicom's subscribers in Guangdong and
Shanghai will now be able to download applications and services over the air,
virtually anytime, anywhere, using QUALCOMM's solution on BREW-enabled
handsets, combined with China Unicom's high-speed data network.
Unicom's newly launched CDMA2000 1X network, which doubles voice capacity
and can support data transfer speeds up to 144 kbps, allows wireless
subscribers to quickly and easily expand the game, entertainment,
communications and business productivity of their handsets.
BREW-based services have been available on China Unicom's CDMA2000 1X
network since the Shanghai trial began in January 2003. Subscribers have been
enjoying the ability to personalize their mobile phones with an array of fun
and useful applications developed for QUALCOMM's BREW platform. The Kyocera
KZ-820 and LGE CU8188 are two of the initial BREW-enabled handsets being
offered to China Unicom's subscribers.
"Unicom is extending its ability to rapidly bring to market the most
innovative wireless data services by combining the most compelling
applications platform, BREW, with the most data capable wireless technology,
CDMA2000 1X," said Jing Wang, senior vice president of QUALCOMM and chairman
of QUALCOMM China. "This launch is an important milestone and exemplifies
China Unicom's leadership in both engineering and marketing. We look forward
to working closely with them to reach, and indeed surpass, their target of
offering BREW services to half their subscriber base this year."
"QUALCOMM will continue to work together with Unicom and its branches to
generate a dynamic and prolific BREW developer community by hosting joint
developer training sessions," continued Wang. "China is one of the world's
fastest growing and important wireless market and these services will enable
China Unicom to further differentiate itself from the competition."
On February 26, 2003, China Unicom and QUALCOMM announced a joint venture,
Unicom-BREW Telecommunication Technologies Ltd., established to foster the
development of BREW-based CDMA wireless data applications and allow China's
CDMA subscribers to experience outstanding leading-edge data services enabled
by QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW) platform.
China Unicom will brand their BREW-based services, "U-Magic."
Deployments of the BREW solution continue as operators throughout the
world join Verizon Wireless, ALLTEL and U.S. Cellular in the United States,
KTF in South Korea, KDDI in Japan, China Unicom, VIVO (the joint venture
between Telefonica Moviles and Portugal Telecom) in Brazil and Telstra in
Australia, in commercializing BREW-based services. More than 50 BREW-enabled
handset models have been offered to consumers worldwide and more than
40 device manufacturers have indicated their interest in the BREW platform.
QUALCOMM's BREW solution is a complete product and business system for the
development and over-the-air deployment of data services on wireless devices.
The BREW solution provides the necessary tools and value-added services to
developers, device manufacturers and wireless operators for application
development and distribution, device configuration, and billing and payment.
