White House Presents National Performance Excellence Award to Motorola Business Involved in Homeland Security
Motorola Commercial, Government and Industrial Solutions Sector (CGISS) Receives Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award
SCHAUMBURG, Ill., May 21, 2003 – Today, Vice President Dick Cheney and Commerce Secretary
Don Evans presented the Commercial, Government and Industrial Solutions Sector (CGISS) of
Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) with the 2002 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The Baldrige
Award is the nation’s premier award for performance excellence and quality achievement.
Bob Barnett, Motorola executive vice president and CGISS past president and chief executive officer,
accepted the Award in a ceremony that took place in Alexandria, Va. “It is an honor to accept this
prestigious Award on behalf of the 14,000 associates worldwide in Motorola’s Commercial,
Government and Industrial Solutions Sector,” said Barnett. “This Award is a wonderful testament to
them as well as our other stakeholders – especially our customers – for whom our vision is to be the
trusted integrator and leading provider of innovative communication and information solutions for public
sector and business-critical enterprise customers. As you know, we are at the forefront of Homeland
Security in assisting our first preventers and first responders. In addition, our Motorola team is
currently meeting the critical communications needs of our military personnel in Iraq. And, as we move
into the reconstruction phase, we are prepared to do considerably more.”
Barnett noted in his remarks that Motorola is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year. “CGISS is the
oldest continuing business within the corporation and we are proud of our heritage and our record of
service to our customers and the public,” said Barnett. “Our associates know that what we do and the
products we make enable our public safety, government and business customers to achieve their
mission.”
“From our efforts to pursue performance excellence over the years, we now have many best-in-class,
best-in-world processes and results – in customer satisfaction, market share and customer-delivered
quality, to name a few,” stated Barnett. “The Baldrige award is a great honor, but also a reinforcing
milestone along the journey of doing the right things right.”
In addition to Motorola CGISS, two other organizations received a Baldrige Award at today’s
ceremony: Branch-Smith Printing Division (Ft. Worth, Texas) and SSM Health Care (St. Louis, Mo.),
the first organization to win in the Award’s health care category.
The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, often described as "the standard of business
excellence," was established by Congress in 1987 to promote quality awareness, recognize the
quality achievements of organizations and publicize successful performance strategies. To date, 49
organizations have received the Baldrige Award. Motorola, Inc. was a recipient of the Baldrige Award in
the Award’s inaugural year of 1988.
Applicants for the Baldrige Award are evaluated in seven categories: leadership, strategic planning,
customer and market focus, information and analysis, human resources focus, process management
and business results. The Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology
manages the Award program. For more information, see: www.baldrige.nist.gov
