Portal Software and Microsoft address WiFi business issues

London (May 27, 2003) — Portal Software, Inc (Nasdaq: PRSF) and Microsoft are uniting to host an important eSeminar on WiFi, May 29, 2003 at 10a.m. UK time titled Hotspots – Great idea, now let’s make money from WiFi!

Portal and Microsoft recognise that the industry has not yet openly discussed a clear business model for making money out of WiFi. The companies are giving a practical demonstration of how money will be made, transferred, and apportioned in a secure environment to generate income from WiFi for the various trading partners.

This eSeminar promises to be the first to take a long, hard look at the real business and commercial issues surrounding WiFi. The eSeminar is based on Portal’s unrivalled WiFi billing experience with some of the world’s leading WiFi players, as well as Microsoft’s on-going commitment to WiFi and enterprise agility.

The eSeminar will take the form of real-life scenarios for consumers and enterprises.

Portal will follow a day in the life of a busy international business executive. It will show how WiFi hotspots enable this person to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in both their business and private life. It will look at typical transactions between the parties involved—the GSM provider, the hotspot provider, and third-party associated enablers—and will ‘follow the flow’ of money as the transactions occur to see precisely who gets what, when, and how!

Microsoft will elaborate upon the security and technology aspects facing enterprises of all sizes in building out WLANs. It will also look at the scenario of how corporate WLAN use can drive widespread consumer WiFi adoption.

“Literally thousands of hotspots are springing up around the globe, and this is bringing a whole raft of issues relating to rating and charging to both experienced carriers and newcomers,” said Kurt Lillywhite, Portal Software’s vice president marketing. “No-one knows for sure which business model will ultimately be successful.”

“From pricing and bundling of services to sharing revenues with roaming and reseller partners, WiFi providers must have the flexibility required in their billing system and still meet their cost of ownership and return on investment objectives. Portal is already successfully supporting leading players such as BT Openzone, Boingo Wireless, Connexion by Boeing, and T-Mobile USA in this area,” Mr. Lillywhite added.

“Microsoft is very pleased to participate in the Portal eSeminar, which is truly refreshing in its in-depth and practical look at how to make the business case for WiFi,” said Bruce Lynn, Microsoft’s Director of Network Service Providers. “We’re confident in Portal’s billing solutions, while Portal’s choice of Microsoft shows its confidence in our technology to support such critical applications.”

Interest in the e-Seminar is already high. To register go to www.portal.com
