CUSTOMERS TO GET ACTIVE WITH O2

29 May 2003 - O2 today unveiled O2 Active - a branded, colour icon menu service that offers new and existing customers a simple means to access and navigate its growing range of mobile data and multimedia services.

Launching from early June, O2 Active will be accessible on a wide range of handsets at prices to suit most budgets - it is available on more than 15 at launch, increasing to over 20 by August. Accessible to customers on both pre or post pay packages, O2 Active consists of specially designed, intuitive icons that guide customers to services such as ringtones, multimedia messaging, games, video, information, alerts and pictures.

Kent Thexton, chief marketing and data officer, mmO2, said: "With O2 Active we aim to build on our leading position as the 'home of text' to become the 'home of advanced data services and colour content'. More than 350,000 customers will be able to access O2 Active at launch, and we expect this to increase rapidly - in April more than 50% of handsets sold through our UK online channel were colour devices. In addition, we continue to see growing uptake of our MMS and Java services, and hold the lead in text and WAP services - demonstrating that our customers want these services. We believe that making mobile data services even more appealing, accessible and easy to use will drive active usage - O2 Active is critical as we head towards our target of 25% of service revenues from data by end 2004."

O2 Active has been tailored and optimised for each device, rather than a 'one size fits all' approach. This ensures that customers get the best possible experience on every one of the supported handsets. A number of devices also include an O2 branded button, which takes a customer direct to services in one click.

O2 Active will offer a range of colour content to its customers, including sports, gossip, entertainment, news, horoscopes and weather. Customers will also benefit from O2's exclusive partnerships, particularly in the broadcast and sports arena (e.g. Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, Big Brother 4 and England Rugby); and also have access to familiar services they may already access via the Internet, for example, Time Out and Lastminute.com.

Kent Thexton continues: "We have developed icon language that is highly intuitive, a look and feel that complements the O2 brand, and have carried out extensive user research and testing to fine-tune the service. O2 Active icons are simple, colourful and easy to understand, and our research shows that they are very appealing."

How to get O2 Active

O2 Active will be on all newly purchased compatible handsets from early June 2003. If an O2 customer already has a compatible phone, they will see the O2 Active menu by visiting their existing WAP menu.

Pricing

O2 Active will be charged in a similar way to WAP browsing today - this varies by country. Many customers will not pay to use O2 Active (as they get free WAP browsing with their tariff) but will only pay for the services/content that they choose to buy or subscribe to. Pricing of the services will vary by country, depending on local marketing plans and programmes. In the UK, for example, ringtones and games will be from £1.50 and the cost of sending an MMS as little as £0.16 per message with O2 'bolt ons'.

Using O2 Active abroad

Contract customers with GPRS-enabled handsets can use O2 Active abroad, in exactly the same way as they would at home, providing they are visiting one of the countries where O2 offers GPRS roaming. O2 offers extensive mobile data roaming to countries including the USA, Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Hong Kong and Singapore. The cost of using O2 Active and mobile data products and services abroad varies by country and can be sourced from O2 customer services.
