New Book and Web Site from Montgomery Research Analyze the Convergence of Communication Devices and Computing Platforms
SAN FRANCISCO--June 2, 2003--
"The Mobile Imperative" Marks the Transition from Always-Connected to Connected Computing
The Mobile Imperative, published by Montgomery Research with key sponsorship from Intel Corporation, assembles a broad compilation of information on what key players in the industry are doing to realize a shared mobility vision. The book examines current products and services and their potential evolution; new growth opportunities, especially for corporations; and new capabilities of mobile technology for all users.
Themes examined in The Mobile Imperative range from how converged devices will integrate computing capabilities and wireless technologies to how users can take advantage of this burgeoning wireless communications infrastructure.
The project features white papers written by leading academics, analysts, consumers, business executives, and other industry stakeholders. It includes a wide range of viewpoints to help create a balanced forum for decision makers. This thought leadership initiative looks at the convergence of three vectors: first, the huge move to establish wireless infrastructures; second, the availability of volume wireless platforms; and third, the fact that most applications today are not designed to work in a wireless environment.
For example, J. Gerry Purdy of MobileTrax forecasts changes that are likely to occur over the next 50 years, to help identify unmet needs in this realm. Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies, discusses the potential benefits of a true, real-time enterprise-wide business engine. Other notable writers discuss what it takes to go mobile, standards in collaboration and what the future portends.
The report, the latest in Montgomery's series of thought leadership initiatives, is printed and distributed to leaders within the industry, with support from more than two dozen solution providers such as BearingPoint, Cisco Systems, Inc., Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, IONA Technologies, Microsoft, Oracle, PeerDirect Corporation, PeopleSoft, Inc., SAP AG, SBS, Inc. and T-Mobile. A companion Web site (www.mobileimperative.com) provides free, online access to the full report.
"In the Mobile Imperative, the concept of Occasionally Connected Computing (OCC) is introduced to address the mobile inflection point. As the world begins to be unwired, OCC represents a substantial opportunity for the builders and consumers of technology to profit from greater performance, reliability, and productivity," said Chris Thomas, chief strategist, Solutions Market Development Group, Intel Corporation.
"We all want faster, better and more efficient ways to work and play. The top-level thinking in The Mobile Imperative will help assure that the decisions made today will lead to a tomorrow in which we can continue working when and where we want to," said Barry Jacobs, publisher of The Mobile Imperative.
