Bonsai Networks Teams with Sun to Create a Cost Effective And
Complete solution allows Service Providers to deliver a high
quality Wi-Fi customer experience and sophisticated management
and support system
SUPERCOMM 2003 -- ATLANTA, GA -- June 2, 2003 -- Bonsai Networks
today announced a solution for an end-to-end carrier grade Wi-Fi
Services Delivery Architecture that was developed in conjunction
with Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW). The solution will
enable carriers to deploy cost effective and ubiquitous public
Wi-Fi access zones utilizing readily available DSL technology.
The Sun and Bonsai Networks solution gives carriers the ability
to deploy a complete platform and to enable Wi-Fi solutions,
services, and access for business and consumers everywhere
using cost effective DSL and SHDSL network technologies. With
the Services Delivery Architecture, service providers will be
able to offer high-quality support and choice to their customers
and business partners. These options include a wide range of
pricing plans, promotions, settlements and revenue sharing with
a diverse set of partners such as retail chains, venue owners,
and other service providers. The Wi-Fi Services Delivery
Architecture includes carrier, consumer, enterprise, and
metropolitan solutions.
Bonsai components in the system enable significant cost of
ownership and time-to-market benefits when compared to
traditional carrier systems. Bonsai provides a single, tightly
integrated platform that enables real-time authentication,
service authorization, customer care, and network management
support. In addition, carriers can leverage a wide range of
pricing, roaming, payment and collections options that will give
providers the resources they need to offer the most creative,
service offerings and lower ongoing operating costs.
"Bonsai's software in combination with our Sun Netra products
and Sun One software stack creates an scalable, robust solution
for convergent Wi-Fi service delivery," said Donna Rubin,
Director for Growth Industries, Sun Microsystems, Inc.á "Wi-Fi
is exploding in both the home and the public sectors. With this
combined platform offering from Sun and Bonsai, Service
Providers can now manage, bill, and deliver services that enable
the personal network experience for businesses, and consumers
alike."
"Customers want simple, affordable wireless Internet access from
trusted suppliers. Sun has an unmatched track record in
building incredibly scalable systems that power the Internet. We
believe Sun's Wi-Fi Services Delivery Architecture is an
important step forward in delivering the systems required to
deliver highly reliable, widely available, easy-to-use
wireless Internet access," said Jim Pflaging, President and CEO
of Bonsai Networks.
The Wi-Fi Services Delivery Architecture is built using Sun's
scalable network computing platform, including its Java(tm)
technology, carrier-grade Netra(tm) systems and storage
products, running on the robust Solaris(tm) Operating
Environment, and Sun One[tm] Application Server to provide a
cost-effective, scalable framework. Sun Netra 20 and 1280
systems power the Solaris based application and access
management servers providing a highly reliable, scalable, and
interoperable machine that is easily integrated into a Telco
carrier's infrastructure. The end result is a solution that can
manage all the data communication, session tracking,
authentication, financial tasks, interfaces to the front and
back office systems, that coordinates all service parameters
within a deployed Wi-Fi network.
The Sun Wi-Fi System Delivery Architecture is available
immediately and will be on display at SuperComm 2003 in Atlanta,
June 1-5 in the Sun Microsystems #23221 and Alcatel #21923 booths.
