Siemens is shaping the future of communication

LifeWorks overcomes communications barriers and enables innovative business models for carriers and enterprises

Atlanta / Munich, Jun 2, 2003 - Siemens IC Networks (ICN) has developed an end-to-end concept for the networks and applications of its enterprise and carrier customers. LifeWorks, which was presented in Atlanta at Supercomm, the leading U.S. trade show for communications solutions, integrates the communications structures of enterprises, carriers and end users – irrespective of location, network type and the applications they use. It allows users to access their applications anytime and with any device. The result: the communications barriers that now exist between fixed and wireless networks and corporate and public networks vanish. “Today, the way we work is dependent on the availability of communication media, instead of how the work would best fit into our personal and business circumstances,” said Siemens ICN Group President Thomas Ganswindt at Supercomm in Atlanta. “LifeWorks, on the other hand, offers a fundamentally new approach that removes the barriers between enterprise and carrier networks. The concept creates additional business opportunities for our customers and underscores Siemens’ claim of being the technology leader in Next Generation Networks.”

The LifeWorks concept integrates the technologies, devices and applications used by enterprises and carriers to produce a single, homogeneous communications infrastructure with anytime, anywhere availability. It integrates Siemens’ carrier and enterprise technologies SURPASS and HiPath. At the same time, LifeWorks is much more than a purely technological approach. It enables completely new business models for enterprises, managed service providers and carriers. A key role in the LifeWorks concept is played by the solutions Surpass Business Connection and Hosted HiPath ein.

Surpass Business Connection is the LifeWorks solution for the managed service provider and carrier market. It permits carriers and other service providers to offer a complete portfolio of services for the business customer segment, such as IP-Centrex, hosted communication services and NextGen applications, from a centrally managed server. Carriers and other service providers can strengthen their market position and tap new revenue streams by providing their business customers with a new range of individual services and applications from a single source:

These new services include unified messaging, click-to-dial, multi-party videoconferencing, whiteboard collaboration and other multimedia applications, as well as integration in Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes. Support for conventional Centrex voice services is also included.

For the first time, groups whose members work from various distant locations can communicate and collaborate smoothly with each other via wireless and fixed networks.

The LifeWorks solution Hosted HiPath uses Surpass softswitch technology and is aimed at very large enterprise customers and organizations who want to deploy multimedia applications based on Real Time Communications technology from Siemens. The concept is based on second generation internet protocol (2gIP) applications. The Hosted HiPath solution can be implemented anywhere in the network and is then made available to users as a service over the network. Hosted HiPath also enables innovative business models and processes:

For example, an enterprise can implement a Hosted HiPath solution in its data center and market – together with other applications – a totally new service to other enterprises and organizations. This makes it possible to provide Voice over IP and VPN services to mobile employees, teleworkers, companies and other customers.

Very large organizations can consolidate their communications infrastructure in a data center and provide headquarters and branch offices with all necessary services over their intranet. The companies profit from the resulting increase in employee productivity. This central solution also helps cut administrative costs and makes communications more flexible – to reflect constantly changing demand. Existing HiPath installations can be integrated in LifeWorks.

With Hosted HiPath, customers of all types and sizes will be able to deploy a wide range of IP applications, including the HiPath OpenScape Real Time Communications suite from Siemens.

LifeWorks from Siemens is being rolled out step-by-step as a solution concept aimed at all market segments.

Siemens Information and Communication Networks (IC Networks) is a leading provider of network technology for enterprises, carriers and service providers. Its comprehensive portfolio - HiPath for enterprises, SURPASS for carriers - comprises IP-based convergence solutions for voice and data, a full range of solutions for broadband access, and optical transport networks. The Siemens Group thus provides complete solutions from a single source for the infrastructure of the Next Generation Network — optimized for a prompt return on investment and to open up new business opportunities for customers. In fiscal 2002 (year-end 30 September) IC Networks posted sales of EUR 9.6 billion.
