Metrowerks To Demonstrate On-Device Debugging of Wireless Java Applications
CodeWarrior Wireless Studio 7 Debug Capabilities
Enhance Wireless Application Quality
2003 JAVAONE CONFERENCE, SAN FRANCISCO - June 10, 2003 - Metrowerks plans to
demonstrate its CodeWarriorÔ Wireless Studio 7 product debugging a J2ME
application on a Sony Ericsson T610 phone at the 2003 JavaOne conference in
San Francisco.
The CodeWarrior debugger is engineered to support the standard Java Debug
Wire Protocol (JDWP) over a TCP/IP connection. On-device debugging on the
Sony Ericsson T610 is scheduled to be performed via a serial cable.
This breakthrough demonstration further establishes Metrowerks' momentum and
innovation in the wireless marketplace, where in 2000 the CodeWarrior
integrated development environment (IDE) became the first tool to support
remote debugging and provide support for wireless JavaÔ applications.
"Testing and debugging are two of the most time-intensive phases of the
application development cycle," said Gerardo A. Dada, marketing services
director for Metrowerks.
"Tools like the CodeWarrior IDE, which help developers speed these
processes, can improve application quality and time to market."
"On-device debugging is the 'holy grail' for mobile application developers,"
said Ralph Barbagallo, president, Flarb Development. "For tracking down
difficult, device-specific bugs in the application, emulation testing is
often insufficient. The CodeWarrior IDE's debug capability for the T610
phone is engineered to allow us to step through code execution on the actual
handset, and this promises to streamline our development process
tremendously."
"Enabling developers to test and debug applications on Sony Ericsson phones
demonstrates our company's commitment to developers, and our focus on
improving their ability to create powerful applications," said Rikko
Sakaguchi, senior vice president and head of corporate function, Content and
Development for Sony Ericsson. "To the best of our knowledge, the T610 is
the first phone to support on-device debugging. Our partnership with
Metrowerks and their leading CodeWarrior IDE are advancing the possibilities
of wireless Java technology."
The Sony Ericsson T610 is a GSM tri-band phone designed to support the Java
and Mophun platforms, and to make a wide range of mobile games and
applications available for download. The T610 provides J2ME mobile
information device profile (MIDP) functionality, and supports Mobile Media
API (JSR 135). It has a screen with 128x160 resolution and 65,000 colors,
advanced messaging capabilities, and a built-in digital camera. It offers
connectivity via general radio packet service, infrared, BluetoothÔ wireless
and serial cable technologies.
CodeWarrior Wireless Studio 7 is a professional tool for J2ME and Personal
JavaT application developers. It includes a multi-target project manager,
and offers integration capability with virtually every leading software
development kit and emulator, simplifying the complex task of developing
applications for different mobile devices. The product's broad feature set,
which includes rapid application development, code completion, wizards,
stationery, code samples, and a powerful class browser, helps to simplify
complex tasks and improve developer productivity.
The CodeWarrior Wireless Studio 7 has earned accolades across the industry
and from around the world, including the Game Developer 2002 Frontline Award
for Best Programming Tool, and Chinese Programmer Magazine's endorsement as
the best tool for J2ME application development.
The CodeWarrior Wireless Studio is part of a leading portfolio of wireless
development tools from Metrowerks, which includes support for Java CardT,
J2SET, J2MET and Personal Java PlatformsT. CodeWarrior is also the tool of
choice for Symbian OST device and application developers, and the market
leader in Palm OST application development tools. In November of 2002,
Metrowerks introduced the CodeWarrior Wireless Studio PDA Edition, the first
IDE to provide on-device debugging and automated build tools for Sharp
Zaurus and Pocket PC based PDAs.
