Silicon Wave And RF Micro Devices Announce Availability Of Bare Die Single-Chip CMOS Bluetooth(r) Components
Fully tested die enable ultra-small modules for mobile phones
AMSTERDAM, Bluetooth World Congress, June 16, 2003 - Silicon Wave, a leading supplier of integrated circuits for Wireless Personal Area Networks, and RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD), a leading provider of proprietary RFICs for wireless communications applications, today announced that Silicon Wave's newest single-chip Bluetooth components, the UltimateBlue( 3000 radio processor and the SiW1712( radio modem, are now available as stand-alone bare die products, also known as Known Good Die (KGD). Both the UltimateBlue 3000 and SiW1712, introduced in March 2003, are also available as fully packaged products.
By supplying customers with fully tested, exceptionally small and ultra-thin die, Silicon Wave enables Bluetooth functionality in a reduced size ideally suited for high-density integration into miniature assemblies. This strategy is expected to meet existing customer requirements for cost-effective, small form factor Bluetooth solutions, especially for module products in mobile phones. Samples of the KGD are available from RF Micro Devices, Silicon Wave's exclusive worldwide distributor.
"Silicon Wave continues to lead the industry in offering a wide range of packaging options to customers," said Brian Pugh, senior director and head of operations for Silicon Wave. "KGD are a flexible alternative for OEMs looking for a small, reliable Bluetooth component. The RF and digital functions of each die have been fully tested, resulting in high production yields for our customers."
On May 20, 2003, Silicon Wave and RF Micro Devices announced a strategic relationship for Bluetooth product distribution and manufacturing. RFMD is becoming the exclusive distribution channel for Silicon Wave's single chip UltimateBlue 3000 radio processor and stand-alone CMOS Bluetooth radio modem solutions. Silicon Wave has also granted RFMD a manufacturing license to manage the supply chain for these products.
UltimateBlue 3000 Radio Processor
The single-chip UltimateBlue 3000 delivers the high-performance capabilities of previous Silicon Wave Bluetooth products while being implemented on a low cost 0.18-micron CMOS process. The highly integrated IC combines a direct conversion radio modem with an ARM7TDMI(r) processor core, Bluetooth baseband logic, and complete protocol software in ROM. All active RF components have been integrated making it the lowest total cost solution. The radio processor's robust, mature baseband delivers the extra MIPS needed for embedded applications such as headsets and hands-free applications and enables full scatternet support without performance degradation.
SiW1712 Radio Modem
The highly integrated single-chip SiW1712 radio modem combines a 2.4-GHz direct conversion radio transceiver and a GFSK burst modem, with digital control functions, into a single piece of silicon. It is implemented on a low cost 0.18-micron CMOS process and delivers the high-performance of Silicon Wave's previous radio modems. The SiW1712 radio modem is specifically designed for mobile phones using CDMA-compatible chipsets with integrated Bluetooth baseband.
