MapInfo Announces miHotSpot: First Location Solution for Wi-Fi Providers
BOSTON--June 26, 2003--MapInfo Corporation (Nasdaq: MAPS) today announced that it will showcase MapInfo(R) miHotSpot(TM), the first location-based solution suite for Wi-Fi providers and Hot Spot operators, at 802.11 Planet. Wireless local area network (WLAN) providers will be able to utilize these solutions to analyze location data to intelligently deploy and manage Wi-Fi networks. Demonstrations of miHotSpot are available at MapInfo's booth (#536) at 802.11 Planet, June 26 and 27, at The World Trade Center, Boston, Massachusetts.
According to the FCC, the market for unlicensed wireless networking devices will be more than $5 billion by 2005, and 20 million Americans will use wireless networking devices by 2007. Most of this growth will be driven by Wi-Fi. To address this inevitable need for WLAN network expansion, MapInfo's Wi-Fi solutions will enable network providers to accurately map and visualize WLAN networks in relation to a customer or an existing service facility. Also with miHotSpot, companies will be able to plan the build-out of WLANs tied to existing enterprise networks. Through a combination of accurate street data, wireless infrastructure data and spatial architecture, MapInfo provides the foundation on which WLAN network providers will better understand where their networks are, what facilities are tied to their networks, and how to better plan and manage their networks.
MapInfo will be offering a full range of custom solutions and supporting architecture to enhance the planning, engineering, operations and customer care of Hot Spots.
-- Hot Spot Screener--Service providers or companies will be able to plan where to put Wi-Fi transmitters for optimal performance and maximum use.
-- Hot Spot Finder--Carriers will be able to provide their customers with directions to the nearest Hot Spot.
-- Hot Spot Customer Care--Consumers looking for the nearest Hot Spot, within a specific network or in a given venue, will be able to access this self-service solution to determine the nearest Hot Spot by distance or drive time. HotSpot Customer Care would then display the best route, including directions.
-- Hot Spot Operator--Service providers will be able to analyze and measure their Wi-Fi networks to ensure quality.
"MapInfo's industry-leading location-based solutions are already being used by major wireless and wireline carriers around the world, so the Wi-Fi market is a natural extension of our technology," said Lonnie Floyd, strategic industry director, communications, at MapInfo. "By leveraging MapInfo's location technology, Wi-Fi providers will be able to make informed decisions that improve planning, engineering and customer care. The result is a more satisfied customer base and more efficient operations."
miHotSpot will be available this Fall. For more information about MapInfo's Wi-Fi solutions visit www.mapinfo.com/wi-fi.
