AccuWeather to Provide Next Generation Weather Content to ALLTEL
State-of-the-art Application to be featured on ALLTEL's Axcess service
STATE COLLEGE, PA, July 8, 2003 -- In an agreement announced today,
AccuWeather.com, (www.accuweather.com) Web site of AccuWeather, Inc., the
world's leading commercial weather service, announced that it has been
selected by ALLTEL (NYSE: AT), the nation's seventh-largest wireless
telephone company, to deliver its award-winning BREW(tm)-enabled wireless
weather application featuring "zoomable" radar to its 7.7 million
wireless customers throughout the country.
As part of the agreement, the AccuWeather application, which is based
on QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(tm) (BREW)
platform, will become one of the featured multimedia applications on ALLTEL's
Axcess, its suite of wireless data services. Axcess Apps, ALLTEL's
downloadable applications service, connects users to cutting-edge
applications where they can access games, e-mail, picture-sharing, ringtones
and a variety of unique tools that can be downloaded directly to a
wireless phone.
"This new agreement with ALLTEL underscores AccuWeather's position as
the leading supplier of weather content and information to the wireless
industry," says Jim Candor, AccuWeather Senior Vice President of New
Media. "With ALLTEL offering our new application to nearly 8 million
wireless customers, AccuWeather's innovative content continues to set the
standard for graphically rich, accurate weather forecasts for wireless
carriers and cell phone manufacturers across the nation."
ALLTEL phones that are Axcess Apps-capable, including the Kyocera 3225,
the Motorola T720 and the Toshiba CDM 9500, will have the ability to
download AccuWeather's application, which is the first BREW-enabled
weather application to offer "zoomable" and animated radar imagery for
wireless phones. The technology delivers rich, weather forecasts and images
to the latest handsets.
The AccuWeather application will feature pinpointed 10-day local
forecasts updated four times daily; detailed Hour-by-Hour(tm) Forecasts;
rain, snow and ice forecasts, including probability, type and likely inches
of precipitation; regional and national Satellite Imagery, updated
hourly; and "zoomable" radar animations for local, metro, state and
regional, which will show weather fronts on the move.
Consumers can watch storms on the radar screen sweep across their
wireless handset and zoom in and out on the radar - to view specific areas,
their city, region or state views - and see with pinpointed detail
exactly what weather will threaten their area. The application also
features AccuWeather.com's patent-pending RealFeel Temperature(tm), which
gives a more accurate measurement of what the temperature actually feels
like based on seven different weather variables.
