Digi Launches Wavespeed/S Wireless Serial Adapter
First O/S Independent Serial to Bluetooth Adapter for Wireless Connectivity in Mission Critical Applications
MINNETONKA, Minn.--July 22, 2003--Digi International (NASDAQ: DGII) today announced the launch of its new Wavespeed(TM)/S Wireless Serial Adapter, which utilizes Bluetooth (TM) technology to connect peripheral devices simply and wirelessly.
The first device of its kind suitable for mission-critical applications, Wavespeed/S is ideal for retail/POS, catering and hospitality, industrial automation, health care and mobile environments. It offers instant EIA-232 serial cable replacement with a wireless alternative that increases user mobility.
Wavespeed/S enables wireless serial data transfer between peripheral devices and a host. For example, two Wavespeed/S adapters can be paired together to create a wireless link between a PC and a bar-code scanner, receipt printer, scale or other serial device. Alternatively, a single unit can be used in server mode to communicate with a Bluetooth-enabled serial device such as a PDA, tablet PC or WAN radio.
Wavespeed/S offers secure and reliable wireless communication via features like encryption, authentication and an adjustable transmit range. The distance between peripheral device and host can be up to 328 feet (100 meters) for the Class 1 radio, or 32 feet (10 meters) with the Class 2 radio.
An O/S independent connectivity solution, Wavespeed/S can connect to any serial port with no changes in the host PC or application software. Its Windows-based configuration tool also makes it very easy to set up.
"We developed the Wavespeed/S as an easy-to-use wireless alternative to conventional cabled serial connections," stated Stephen Popovich, chief operating officer and corporate vice president of Inside Out Networks, the subsidiary of Digi that manufactures the product. "As well as allowing the convenience of mobile use of serial peripheral devices, eliminating cables offers substantial time and money savings in a wide range of applications."
"Wavespeed/S is an excellent example of Inside Out Networks' ability to design easy-to-use connectivity solutions that deliver real value for the end user," said Joseph Dunsmore, president and chief executive officer of Digi International.
Wavespeed/S customer, Chip Smith, president, Advantage Industrial Automation commented: "Digi's new Wavespeed/S is an outstanding device that increases our ability to provide value-added solutions for our customers. This innovative product is certainly consistent with Digi's reputation as the leading provider of Connectware."
