Ericsson selected by Gibtelecom to deploy its GPRS network in Gibraltar
Gibtelecom has signed an agreement with Ericsson for the deployment
of its General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Network in Gibraltar. The order, valued at nearly EUR 2 million, includes the supply of the complete GPRS network and the updating of its GSM mobile switch.
The agreement includes the delivery, installation, systems
integration and adaptation of existing sites as well as the technical support, maintenance of the network and consultancy.
This agreement enhances the good relationship which Gibtelecom enjoys
with Ericsson, a relationship that goes back to 1995 when Gibtel
first provided public mobile services using an Ericsson AXE-10 switch
for its GSM 900 network.
"Gibtelecom has chosen Ericsson for their professionalism and proven
track record in this complex field of wireless technologies," said
Ernest Britto, chairman of Gibtelecom.
"This contract will maintain Gibtelecom's leading position at the
forefront of technology and demonstrates the company's continuing
commitment to investing in Gibraltar," said Chairman Britto. "GPRS
will provide Internet connectivity to local GSM customers as well as
to roamers in Gibraltar."
The service will open up a new era in telecommunications connectivity
on "the Rock." Deployment is scheduled to begin immediately and the
service is expected to be available to customers before the end of
the year.
Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet
communications through its continuous technology leadership.
Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson
is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the
world.
