Mobile Entertainment Forum Creates Common Reference For Industry Evolution
August 5th. A unique new glossary of terms defining the mobile entertainment industry was released today by the Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF).
The rapid evolution of mobile entertainment and advances in technology have meant that a number of industries, including entertainment and telecommunications, must now communicate effectively if mobile entertainment is to reach its full potential.
However, each industry has created its own terminology and definitions, leading to misunderstandings as the two industries converge.
The glossary, compiled and edited by the MEF’s Strategic Partner Stephen N. Wiener, with extensive input from MEF members, provides a valuable resource for the continued growth of mobile entertainment by creating a common reference point for all participants. “The worlds of entertainment and telecommunications are as different as two businesses can be,” said Mr. Wiener. “Often the same terms are used in each industry and mean very different things. These differences have to be recognized to form a basis of mutual understanding. This reference will help build the common ground for Mobile Entertainment to thrive.”
The glossary is a ‘living’ document and will be regularly revised and updated to align with the industry as it continues to grow.
“The mobile entertainment sector is a unique environment,” said Dr. Rann Smorodinsky, the Chairman of the MEF and co-founder of Cash-U. “The combination of cutting edge wireless technology and the ability to deliver a range of entertainment services to handsets makes it the most dynamic medium in the world today. The interface between the very technical and hardware oriented wireless community and the enormously broad and varied entertainment sector has been a major constraint, simply because the two sectors are approaching this area from such different perspectives. The creation of a common glossary for the sector may seem trivial, but it is a valuable step in the evolution of mobile entertainment.”
In March 2003, The MEF Commercial Task Force released 'Mobile Entertainment Scenarios: Outlook and Opportunities in an Emerging Market,' a white paper researched by Booz Allen Hamilton, authored by Matthew Bellows, Editor, Mobile Entertainment Analyst. The glossary is the 2nd deliverable produced by the MEF’s commercial task force, headed by Booz, Allen & Hamilton. Dr. Steffen Leistner, Vice President at Booz Allen and Head of the MEF's Commercial Task Force said “The objective of the MEF's commercial task force is to create an environment which can maximise the growth and potential for all participants. The glossary is a very valuable component of this goal, as it establishes for the first time a common reference point for a new and rapidly evolving medium.”
