New Broadcom High-Performance Blutonium(TM) Radio Combines With QUALCOMM's MSM(TM) Chipset to Drive Integration of Bluetooth(TM) in 3G CDMA Devices
URL(s): Broadcom Corp.
IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 18 -- Broadcom Corporation
(Nasdaq: BRCM), the leading provider of silicon solutions enabling broadband
communications, today announced availability of its Blutonium(TM) BCM2004
Bluetooth(TM) radio chip, developed and qualified specifically to be combined
with the QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM))
Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) baseband solutions. The MSM chips
include fully integrated Bluetooth baseband technology to provide a complete,
fully tested Bluetooth solution for third generation (3G) CDMA devices.
Designed by Broadcom and tested in collaboration with QUALCOMM, the
Broadcom(R) BCM2004 provides significant time-to-market and performance
advantages for equipment manufacturers integrating Bluetooth into 3G mobile
devices.
Broadcom recently announced a non-binding agreement with QUALCOMM
reflecting their intent to form a strategic collaboration to jointly promote
and market Bluetooth solutions for 3G CDMA mobile phones, and the BCM2004 is
one of the fruits of these efforts. Broadcom is a key supplier of Bluetooth
RF solutions for QUALCOMM's MSM baseband products, enabling a complete
Bluetooth offering for 3G CDMA devices that allows handsets to wirelessly
connect to headsets, PDAs, laptops and other mobile devices for wireless
synchronization, file sharing and hands-free phone operation.
QUALCOMM is currently shipping integrated Bluetooth baseband technology on
a number of its 3G CDMA-enabled MSM5xxx and MSM6xxx chipset solutions.
"The combination of Broadcom's extensive experience integrating Bluetooth
technology in cellular handsets with our proven leadership and experience in
integrating client networking technologies uniquely positions us to promote
and enable Bluetooth in next-generation CDMA devices," said Scott Bibaud,
Director of Bluetooth Marketing for Broadcom. "The design of the
Blutonium(TM) BCM2004 reflects that leadership, meeting the performance and
cost requirements vital for mass adoption of the technology in handsets that
increasingly require short-range connectivity to peripherals, accessories and
other mobile devices."
Working in conjunction with the Bluetooth baseband and protocol stack
already integrated into QUALCOMM's 3G CDMA baseband single-chip solution and
compliant with QUALCOMM's proprietary interface, Broadcom's BCM2004 radio chip
provides full Bluetooth functionality for CDMA wireless devices. 3G CDMA
mobile handsets with integrated Bluetooth are available today, powered by
previous generations of Broadcom's low-cost, radio-only and single-chip RF
Bluetooth solutions.
The BCM2004 all-CMOS radio delivers significant size, cost and performance
advantages over existing Bluetooth radio solutions while providing the highest
level of chip integration, eliminating all active external components.
Leading the industry in radio sensitivity and transmit power, the new radio
enables the lowest added bill-of-materials cost for integration of high-
performance Bluetooth radios into QUALCOMM chipset-based 3G CDMA mobile
handsets. The BCM2004 is part of Broadcom's Blutonium(TM) family of products.
BCM2004 Provides Superior Radio Performance
Broadcom's new BCM2004 Bluetooth radio is the next-generation of the
BCM2002, which is currently the industry's most widely used radio based on
QUALCOMM's proprietary specification for Bluetooth enabled handsets. The
BCM2004 has been designed to provide simple integration with CDMA mobile
phones while maintaining industry leading radio sensitivity and transmit power
and better power, size and cost advantages than Broadcom's previous generation
chip. It was built to handle the very harsh radio frequency (RF) environment
of mobile phones while maintaining high radio performance and optimizing
overall phone performance.
The BCM2004 provides strong spurious and blocking performance that
supports simultaneous operation with GPS, CDMA, WCDMA, and GSM/GPRS worldwide
radio frequency plans. On-chip auto calibration eliminates process variation
across components and mitigates temperature variation, enabling consistent
performance in high-volume applications. In addition, the exceptional
blocking performance capability of the BCM2004 exceeds Bluetooth requirements,
eliminating RF filtering to receive strong, reliable signals from other
Bluetooth devices. The fractional-N frequency generation technology feature
eliminates the need for a dedicated reference crystal.
Broadcom's Blutonium(TM) Bluetooth Product Family
Broadcom's Blutonium product family contains the broadest line of
Bluetooth qualified components available, enabling high performance, short
range wireless communications between devices and equipment ranging from PCs
to PDAs, cell phones and other peripherals in the home and workplace. The
Blutonium family includes the BCM2040, currently the only available system-on-
a-chip solution for wireless keyboards and mice; the BCM2002 radio-only
device; and single-chip integrated baseband and radio solutions such as the
BCM2035 and BCM2033. The BCM2035, BCM2033 and BCM2002 are currently in high
volume production with several major cellular phone and other product
manufacturers.
The Blutonium line also includes associated Bluetooth protocol firmware,
providing end-to-end enabling technology for a range of Bluetooth
applications. Products developed using Broadcom's Bluetooth Qualification
Board-qualified Blutonium chips and firmware can attain Bluetooth
qualification with minimal effort, accelerating time to market.
Availability
The BCM2004 is offered in multiple packaging options, including an ultra-
small chip-scale package and is currently shipping to Broadcom's early access
partners.
