Orange Slovensko Uses ESRI’s GIS Software and Solutions for Location-Based Services

Redlands, California—ESRI, the leading developer of geographic information system (GIS) software, announces that Orange Slovensko, the largest Slovakian telecommunication operator, recently launched a suite of mass-market short message service (SMS) and wireless applications protocol (WAP) location-based service (LBS) applications based on ESRI’s GIS technology, and Cell ID mobile positioning.

Orange subscribers can find the locations of the nearest selected facilities, such as hotels, ATMs, fuel stations, restaurants, service workshops, hospitals, and so forth, as well as the residences of their friends and acquaintances on maps directly displayed on their mobile phones. In addition, they can determine the immediate geographic location of other users who are simultaneously using the system. Location-based games and access to an Internet interface of a localization application are also available.

ESRI software played a key role in the solutions developed by Orange Slovensko for its LBS applications. ArcSDE ensures the processing and immediate display of information from the enormous spatial databases stored in the Oracle database management system (DBMS), and ArcIMS provides for the creation and display of maps for LBS applications in the WAP and Internet environments.

Comments Radoslav Jakubek, LBS project coordinator at Orange Slovensko, “Before we could incorporate ESRI products into our LBS solution, we had to put them through a series of acceptance tests that have validated their reliability and performance.”

The optimal configuration of spatial data servers adjusted for the extensive operational load is the result of the professional cooperation between the GIS department of Orange Slovensko and ArcGEO Information Systems, s.r.o., a sub-distributor to SynerGIS.

During the preparation phase of its location services development, Orange Slovensko had to process large volumes of spatial data of different types and qualities. This task has been accomplished by using a number of ESRI’s GIS software products including ArcInfo, ArcPad, ArcView, and ArcGIS extensions.

Martin Hollý, senior GIS analyst at Orange Slovensko adds, “ESRI products have been chosen for their ability to perform a wide range of GIS tasks including LBS support.”

According to Martin Kamenský, GIS manager at Orange Slovensko, the company has used ESRI products, such as ArcInfo and ArcView and subsequently MapObjects and ArcIMS, since its founding more than six years ago, and they have proven their capabilities in terms of completeness and scalability.

“ESRI’s software has become the supporting platform of our technological solutions for various tasks developed at our GIS department for the needs of our internal and external customers,” Kamenský explains.

“The Orange SK deployment represents one of the most comprehensive and diverse uses of our entire GIS software family for wireless LBS in a mobile operator environment,” says Jonathan Spinney, industry manager, Location-Based Services Department of ESRI. “Orange was able to creatively apply our software capabilities to offline, back-office processes as well as use our online Internet mapping platform to serve LBS to their customer base. We are very pleased to see Orange use our GIS in a holistic approach.”

Currently, Orange Slovensko is one of the largest ESRI product users in the Slovak Republic and uses the majority of the products in multiple licensing environments.
