QUALCOMM and Wireless Industry Leaders to Highlight International Growth and Success of BREW(TM) Solution at BREW 2003 Developers Conference
Third Annual Conference to Feature Keynotes From QUALCOMM's Dr. Irwin
Jacobs, Global Futurist Dr. James Canton and Top Executives
From Commercial BREW Operators
SAN DIEGO, March 10 -
QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code
Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced
the line-up of keynote speakers and business and technical track presenters
for its BREW 2003 Developers Conference, to be held April 28-30 at the
Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. The conference provides a comprehensive
forum where developers and industry partners can exchange ideas and expertise
for the development and deployment of applications and services enabled by
QUALCOMM's BREW solution. An estimated 1,200 conference attendees from around
the world will gather to attend valuable business and technical sessions,
build and strengthen key relationships, and discover how 'BREW is Real' and
generating revenue for developers, operators and handset manufacturers. For
more details about the conference or to register, visit the BREW 2003
Developers Conference Web site at www.brew2003.com .
"BREW 2003 will provide developers, manufacturers and wireless service
providers with the most compelling opportunities of the year for advancing
BREW initiatives, business development and technical knowledge," said Peggy
Johnson, president of QUALCOMM Internet Services. "The BREW solution has
experienced explosive growth on an international scale, and 2003 is already
promising to be another tremendous year for BREW adoption on several
continents -- proving that BREW continues to be a valuable, money-making
solution for all of the members of the wireless value chain."
The conference will include 25 technical and business sessions providing
attendees the opportunity to network with BREW technical experts, industry
luminaries and operator representatives. BREW 2003 keynote and general
session speeches will feature QUALCOMM executives and top executives from
commercial BREW operators. Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs, chairman and chief
executive officer of QUALCOMM, will deliver the opening keynote speech on
Tuesday, April 29. On Wednesday, April 30, Dr. James Canton, a renowned
global futurist and author, will deliver a special keynote titled, "The Future
of the Wireless Information Society."
Senior executives from commercial BREW operators, including Verizon
Wireless, KDDI and the Joint Venture between Telefonica Moviles and Portugal
Telecom, will discuss their experiences in deploying the BREW solution, the
success of their BREW-enabled wireless services, and share their perspectives
on how developers can benefit from the virtual marketplace for BREW
applications. Confirmed speakers from these operators include Dr. Yasuhiko
Ito, Executive Managing Officer, Solution Business Sector, KDDI; Luis Avelar,
vice president of IT and Products and Services Engineering from the Joint
Venture between Telefonica Moviles and Portugal Telecom; and Jim Straight,
vice president of wireless data for Verizon Wireless.
The second annual BREW Developer Awards will be presented during the
general session on Tuesday, April 29. The BREW Developer Awards will
recognize the best BREW applications in six different categories that are
shaping today's wireless applications landscape. The application award
categories include Best Productivity Application, Best Entertainment
Application, Best Game Application, Best Location-Based Service Application,
Best Communications Application and Best Extension/Technology Application.
Developers will also have the opportunity to meet with and learn from
fellow developers who will be showcasing live, engaging demonstrations of the
latest innovations in BREW-enabled handsets and applications in the BREW
Partner Pavilion. The BREW Partner Pavilion will once again feature a special
BREW Engineering Support Lab staffed by QUALCOMM engineers who will be
dedicated to answering questions and providing technical assistance to BREW
developers.
Deployments of the BREW solution continue as operators throughout the
world join Verizon Wireless and ALLTEL in the United States, KTF in South
Korea, KDDI in Japan, and China Unicom in commercializing BREW-based services.
The Joint Venture between Telefonica Moviles and Portugal Telecom plans to
roll out BREW services to subscribers in Latin America in March 2003. More
than 40 BREW-enabled handset models have been offered to consumers worldwide
and more than 40 device manufacturers have indicated their interest in the
Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW) platform.
QUALCOMM's BREW platform is a thin application execution environment that
provides an open, standard platform for wireless devices. The BREW platform
is part of a complete, end-to-end solution for wireless applications
development, device configuration, application distribution, and billing and
payment. The complete BREW solution includes the BREW SDK(TM) (software
development kit) for developers, the BREW applications platform and porting
tools for device manufacturers, and the BREW Distribution System (BDS) that is
controlled and managed by operators -- enabling them to easily get
applications from developers to market and coordinate the billing and payment
process. Operators' BREW-based services will enable consumers to customize
their handsets by downloading applications over the air from an operator's
application download server. The BREW platform is a product of QIS, a
division within the QUALCOMM Wireless & Internet (QWI) Group of QUALCOMM
Incorporated.
