European Developers See Fewer Layoffs Than North American Counterparts, Shows New Evans Data Survey

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Mar 10, 2003 - The new Developer Marketing Patterns Report from development research company Evans Data Corporation reveals that last year fewer European developers were laid off than in North America. The survey, focused on development professionals in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), indicates that 42% of companies had layoffs last year compared to 51% in North America.

One explanation could be that developers in EMEA earned less than their North American counterparts last year, making layoffs less necessary. Half earned below US$40,000 and about two thirds earned less than US$55,000, compared with North America where two thirds earned more than $55,000 and more than a quarter earned over $100,000. Despite this, a majority of developers are content, with less than 45% willing to switch careers for more money.

"The market for development tools in the region continues to thrive," commented Jeremy McGee, director of Bassett Marketing, EMEA representatives for Evans Data. "And developers are a critical group for software firms to influence -- 81% make recommendations for purchases."

Other findings from the February survey of 400 interviews with professional developers included:

-- The need to understand new, complex technologies has led to an increase in user group membership. 70% of enterprise developers surveyed are members of user groups, and 40% attend meetings once a month or more. -- Just under a third of developers can purchase a development tool with a price tag in excess of $1,000 without the need for approvals by anyone else. -- 44% of development tools in EMEA are purchased online and only 13% of developers purchase their tools through a catalog or retail store.
