TRANSACTION NETWORK SERVICES LAUNCHES TNS TRANSROAM TO ENABLE INTERNATIONAL WIRELESS ROAMING
Now Wireless Carriers Have a Competitive Alternative for Global GSM Signaling
Reston, VA March 17, 2003 – Transaction Network Services (TNS), one of the world’s leading providers of fast, cost-effective data communications services for transaction-oriented applications, today introduced SS7 signaling services for GSM operators worldwide. With this new service wireless carriers can more cost effectively enable their customers to use their cell phones to make and receive calls as they travel internationally, enhancing the profitability associated with both outbound and inbound roaming.
Now commercially available, TNS TransRoam is an SCCP (Signaling Connection Control Part) gateway service that provides the necessary signaling and number conversions to support international roaming for cell phones utilizing GSM technology. “While most companies are just talking about global roaming, TNS is delivering a comprehensive signaling conversion platform and global roaming solution with TNS TransRoam,” said Barry Toser, Senior Vice President and General Manager, TNS Telecom Services Division.
“GSM operators recognize the revenue potential of international roaming, but are often deterred by the complexity and costs of building and maintaining the necessary network infrastructure,” continued Toser. “Standing by our commitment to deliver new service offerings to wireless carriers, TNS rapidly designed, built, and rolled-out a comprehensive, cost-effective global roaming service that provides mobile operators with advanced capabilities and opportunities for new revenue streams today.”
TNS TransRoam is an SCCP gateway that provides the signaling and conversion services necessary to transport GSM-MAP (Mobile Application Part) messages within and between networks based on North American (ANSI) and international (ITU) signaling standards. To enable mobility across networks, North American and International wireless carriers must interconnect so that subscribers can be located and authenticated. This requires a signaling conversion platform that translates between ANSI and ITU standards and between the varying numbering systems used around the world. TNS TransRoam allows mobile operators to interconnect with numerous roaming partners through one signaling connection to TNS. TNS TransRoam provides mobile operators with access to more than 280 international roaming destinations.
The anticipated continued growth of the GSM market presents significant revenue opportunities for wireless carriers. The GSM Association estimates that there were 787 million GSM subscribers across 190 countries by the end of 2002 and predicts that global GSM subscribers will reach one billion by the end of 2003.
“TNS TransRoam leverages TNS’ technology and networking expertise, international partnerships, and the transaction volume across multiple customers to provide an international roaming network that offers high-quality services at extremely competitive prices,” said Toser.
TNS manages and supports a full range of SS7 services for its carrier customers, providing nationwide LATA coverage and access to a wide array of Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) services such as Local Number Portability (LNP), CNAM, 800, and Custom Local Area Signaling Services (CLASS).
