BOINGO and PCTEL Partner for 2.5G Software; Boingo Integrating PCTEL's 2.5G Technology with Boingo Wi-Fi Client Software
CHICAGO & SANTA MONICA, Calif.--March 18, 2003--PCTEL, Inc. (Nasdaq:PCTI), a leading provider of Internet
access products and wireless mobility software, and Boingo Wireless, the largest aggregator of Wi-Fi hot spots for the wireless
industry, announced today a multi-year licensing agreement.
PCTEL will provide Boingo with software modules for Windows and
PocketPC platforms that will allow users of Boingo's leading Wi-Fi access software to connect to so-called "2.5G" data networks, in
particular GPRS, 1XRTT (CDMA) and iDEN systems. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"Boingo is rapidly combining the largest aggregated network of over 1,200 Wi-Fi hot spots in hotels, airports, cafes and other public
spaces with 2.5G, into a single integrated offering," said Dave Hagan, president of Boingo. "Our customers, as well as the customers
of our major carrier and ISP distribution partners such as EarthLink and Fiberlink, will be able to stay connected wherever they go. At
a hot spot, they'll enjoy ultra-high-speed, low-cost Wi-Fi access. When not in a hot spot, they will be able to `fall back' to a 2.5G
network, all with the same client software and subscription account," added Hagan.
"We've communicated a simple message about our wireless networking mission," said Marty Singer, PCTEL's Chairman and CEO.
"We enable roaming and improve the user's experience; we work with anyone's network and the leading access hardware. We are
delighted that Boingo has acknowledged the value of our technology in accessing cellular data networks and we are excited to be
their supplier for these software modules," added Singer.
"PCTEL has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in 2.5G client technology, and we're excited to have them as a technology
supplier to Boingo," added Hagan.
