New Content, Training, Forums and Tools Make it Easier for Millions of Individual Developers at java.sun.com to Innovate Faster
BOSTON -- Web Services Edge Conference -- March 19, 2003 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced the
launch of the Sun Developer Network, a new program focused on providing software developers with content, training,
support and technology access they require to innovate and deliver applications and system solutions faster. The
expanded program and portal located at java.sun.com uniquely integrates community dialog, content, access to
technologies and advanced learning that will enable Sun and individual developers to more quickly and efficiently
implement applications that span multiple technologies, standards and operating environments.
"The Sun Developer Network builds on the momentum created with our recently announced Project Orion strategy,"
said Mike Bellissimo, senior director, Software Developer Marketing for Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Exemplifying the
same themes of integration and simplification that characterize Project Orion, the Sun Developer Network will bring
the benefits of cost reduction and an overall productivity increase to all members of Sun's software community
through a consolidated program and extensive Web portal."
The new Sun Developer Network and its flagship developer portal, java.sun.com, provides developers with tools,
technologies and resources with which to build open, secure and reliable solutions. Developers can find the most up
to date network computing and Web services technology tools and information including:
New content/communication -- Technical audiocasts, syndicated content from development partners, and a
focus on Java Web services in the month of March with new sample applications and code snippets are just a
few examples of the types of new content available via the Sun Developer Network.
New training -- On-line tutorials, access to SMI Press books, and the Java On-line program provide a wealth
of training material for developers to successfully learn about, build and deploy services that span multiple
technologies and standards.
Community support -- An expanded list of newsgroups and connections with User Groups covering Web
services and Java technology provides developers with opportunities to interact with their peers and Sun
technology leaders to get answers to their design, development and deployment questions.
Expanded software distribution -- Access to Sun technologies and software through a variety of vehicles,
including software subscriptions and evaluation downloads, and via early access programs. This month a
60-day free trial version of the Java Application Verification Kit for the Enterprise (Java AVK Enterprise) is
available on the Sun Developer Network at http://java.sun.com/j2ee/verified/.
Sun's Developer Vision
The vision of Network Computing is predicated on developers building services to the network that can reach
everywhere, through every device, on virtually every platform. Membership in the Sun Developer Network provides
developers with the advanced support and resources to build these services for both internal and external
applications. Sun's developer-driven software strategy translates into sharing with developers -- in both commercial
markets and open source markets, including Linux -- a common focus on innovation, open standards and strong
communities. A commitment to shared innovation enables Sun to offer developers:
Choice, through open source investments;
Customer value, through community building efforts; and
Flexibility, through multi-platform technologies and multi-language support.
Sun's unique approach is to drive a partnership with the individual developer that allows technology to evolve and
create markets and standards rather than locking developers into proprietary platforms. Through shared innovation
and community collaboration with Sun, the Sun Developer Network helps developers evolve the world of technology
to meet their changing needs. The Sun Developer Network unifies developer program access across all of Sun's key
developer technologies and products, and java.sun.com brings together the tools, technology and expertise that
individual developers need to make the right choices for their business.
