The National Hockey League, and its official wireless provider, Nextel Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: NXTL) today announced a
wireless Web initiative offering hockey fans up-to-the-minute scores, standings, statistics and exclusive NHL content delivered right to
their Nextel phone and available at the touch of a button to Nextel Online subscribers.
"We are thrilled to partner with industry leaders such as Nextel, Sun Microsystems, Airborne, and Tira to offer compelling wireless
content. Our fans are incredibly passionate and continue to demonstrate a desire to utilize technology to stay connected to all things
NHL," said NHL Senior Vice President, Television and Media Ventures Doug Perlman. "These applications will help feed that
demand."
The wireless initiative allows Nextel subscribers to get the latest hockey news delivered to their mobile phone in a convenient and
timely manner anywhere on Nextel's extensive nationwide network. Developed in conjunction with Airborne Entertainment, the
wireless version of NHL.com offers rich text based information, news and content, including a continuously updated directory of
recent scores, upcoming games, statistical leaders, and comprehensive game reports. Hockey fans can also visit NHL.com and
register to receive personalized, custom text message alerts from live NHL game action delivered right to their phone, keeping them
on top of all the action, no matter where they are.
"Nextel is continuously working to provide its subscribers with the latest and most feature-rich wireless data content to enhance both
their business and their lifestyle, and the content delivered through NHL wireless is a excellent example of these efforts," said Tim
Dunne, vice president, business development, Nextel Communications.
In addition to news and information, as part of the initiative, the NHL becomes the first professional sports league to offer an arcade
style wireless game. Available for download at iDEN Update (www.idenupdate.com), NHL PowerShot Hockey is a fast paced,
two-on-two game, where players try to out skate, outshoot, and outscore their opponents.
Published by Tira Studios, a leading publisher of mobile games and applications, NHL PowerShot Hockey was developed for and is
available on color Java(TM) platform enabled mobile phones. Passing, checking, and taking the elusive "Power Shot" can all be
controlled with easy to use keypad or joystick navigation, putting the power of your favorite teams in the palm of your hand. NHL
PowerShot Hockey is written in Java 2 platform, Micro Edition (J2ME(TM)), the de facto standard for wireless application development
from NHL partner Sun Microsystems, which delivers rich colors, graphics and interactivity to wireless handset users.
