Telerama Internet Propels Pittsburgh to National Lead in Ratio of WiFi Hot Spots to Population
— Telerama Significantly Expands Wireless Internet (WiFi) Hot Spots Network, Eighteen Additional Establishments Recognize Benefits of Offering WiFi to Customers —
PITTSBURGH, PA – April 2, 2003 – Telerama Internet — experts in Internet connectivity for over 12 years — today announced it has nearly doubled the Telerama Wireless Internet (WiFi) Hot Spots Network, making Pittsburgh first in the nation in ratio of Hot Spots to population. Telerama’s WiFi service offers Pittsburghers the freedom to surf the Internet on laptops, PDAs and other mobile wireless devices, at broadband speeds unfettered by data lines. In total, eighteen coffee shops, bars, restaurants, laundromats and other venues have joined the growing list of establishments offering Telerama’s high-speed WiFi service to their customers. New Hot Spot sites that will offer Telerama WiFi include Duds & Suds — the first laundromat in Pittsburgh to offer WiFi — and The Mattress Factory, a museum featuring contemporary art.
“Shortly after we began offering Telerama Internet’s Wireless service, we noticed that people were staying longer, buying more and that new groups of customers were seeking us out,” says Ken Zeff, owner of three Crazy Mocha coffeehouses. “Installation was totally unobtrusive, and we share in the revenue generated from the service in addition to enjoying increased sales. Now we offer it all three of our coffeehouses.”
Wireless Internet (WiFi) access is available at 49 Telerama Hot Spots conveniently located all over Pittsburgh (see attached list). The addition of new Telerama WiFi access points gives Pittsburgh 66 Hot Spots overall, making it first in ratio of Hot Spots to population (1.97 per 10,000), just ahead of San Francisco and Seattle; moves Pittsburgh up to eighth nationally in total number of Hot Spot locations (66), just behind San Diego, Chicago, Atlanta and Los Angeles; and fifth according to Hot Spots per square mile (1.20), right behind Seattle. The rankings are based on an analysis conducted by Telerama Internet using data on Hot Spots compiled by 802.11 Planet.com as of March 31, 2003, and 2000 United States Census figures.
By becoming a Telerama host site, coffee shops, bars, bookstores, cafés, laundromats, hotels and other venues can attract more customers, generate new revenue streams and capitalize on free customized advertising opportunities. Telerama’s Wireless Internet Hot Spot Pack, an incentive package for host establishments — including marketing materials — consists of:

month value)
Up to $19 in bonuses for hosts for every new user who signs up at their location

information about how Wireless Internet access attracts and retains customers
"We’ve been offering public WiFi service for nearly two years. Based on our experience, we’ve developed an outstanding incentive package that generates new revenues for establishments offering Telerama WiFi,” said Doug Luce, Founder and President of Telerama Internet. “The number of new Hot Spots we’ve added in such a short period of time illustrates that word is getting out that Telerama’s WiFi offering is a win-win for everyone involved, and that consumer demand is high.”
There is no cost at all for host Hot Spots to join the program, or for setup or maintaining the service. All that is required to become a Telerama hot spot is a one-time setup visit from Telerama’s technical team. Additionally, Telerama handles any technical issues for users and hosts, should any ever arise. Individuals interested in experiencing wireless Internet surfing can join nearly 2,000 other users by signing up at www.telerama.com. All a new user requires is a wireless modem card.
