Siemens to build GPRS network for mobile operator AIS in Thailand

The leading Thai mobile operator Advanced Info Service PCL (AIS) has chosen Siemens Information and Communication Mobile (Siemens mobile) to equip its GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network. As part of the contract, Siemens mobile will supply and install all the components needed to set up GPRS services in AIS's GSM network.

Siemens mobile will be equipping AIS's GSM 900 mobile network in the east and north-east of Thailand with GPRS technology and adding to systems installed earlier. This GPRS solution comprises network components such as SGSN (Serving GPRS Support Node) and GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node), Switch Commander, gateway and firewall systems, and software upgrades for the switching network. This will allow AIS to offer its customers a large number of new services including faster internet and intranet access, Multimedia Messaging (MMS), and expanded WAP applications (Wireless Application Protocol). GPRS is likely to be available throughout the country as early as April.

"Our decision to chose Siemens to equip our GPRS network was primarily due to our many years of successful collaboration in the GSM sector. We will soon be able to offer our customers additional attractive non voice services based on GPRS," said Yingluck Shinawatra, President of AIS.

"We are proud to now also be able to demonstrate the reliability of our GPRS technology to AIS. This is another major success for us in the Asian market," said Christoph Caselitz, President of Networks within the Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group.

AIS is Thailand's leading mobile provider with over 11 million customers and a 55 percent share of the market. Siemens mobile has been supplying AIS with GSM network infrastructure, such as digital switching technology, base stations, and intelligent network services, and also WAP solutions (mobile internet access) since 1995.

Over 820 million users have made GSM the most successful mobile radio standard in the world. With more than 180 international customers at present in over 90 countries, Siemens mobile is number three worldwide among system suppliers of GSM mobile networks, and is the market leader as an equipment provider for prepaid technology. The Group also holds a top position for GPRS and UMTS. In just one year it has moved up from sixth to third position worldwide among the leading providers of mobile infrastructure. Thanks to this positive development, Siemens mobile has been able to hold its own very well in what is a difficult market environment.

The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group offers the complete range of mobile solutions including mobile devices, infrastructure and applications. Devices include mobile phones, fashion accessory phones, wireless modules, mobile organizers and cordless phones as well as products for wireless home networks. The infrastructure portfolio includes GSM, GPRS and 3G mobile network technologies from base stations and switching systems to intelligent networks, e.g. for prepaid services. Mobile Applications cover end-to-end solutions for Messaging, Location Based Services or Mobile Payment. For fiscal 2002 (September 30), Siemens mobile recorded sales of EUR 11 billion and employed approximately 28,600 people worldwide.
