WirelessDevNet.com Press Release

Captaris Launches the Infinite Push Proxy Gateway

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates--Captaris (Nasdaq:CAPA), a leading provider of business information delivery solutions, today announced the availability of the new Infinite Push Proxy Gateway (PPG). This product is a natural companion to the Infinite WAP Gateway, and can also be used independently to allow applications to send Short Message Service (SMS), Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Push and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) notifications to mobile users.

The PPG is being launched today at The MEPPC Summit, the 1st PDA Summit for the Middle East and Gulf Region (http://www.mepocketpc.com/index.htm), being held at The Emirates Towers in Dubai on 9-10 December. Mr Fadi Honein, Captaris Regional Manager for the Middle East, noted that, "In the last eighteen months, there has been tremendous growth in the number of mobile business subscribers in the Middle East." He continued, "This region has always been quick at adopting new mobile communication technology. ISPs are quick to implement the latest generation infrastructure and consumers use the latest hand held devices to perform the newest applications, such as MMS. We are confident that new technologies, such as the Infinite Push Proxy Gateway, will be well received to allow organisations to send SMS, WAP Push and MMS notifications to mobile users."

Captaris will also build on the value of the PPG by integrating it into other Captaris products. For example RightFax, the Captaris flagship product, currently integrates with back-end application servers such as SAP and Oracle to format and deliver information by fax and email. The next version of RightFax will be compatible with the PPG. Those same back-end applications will then be able to deliver information to mobile users as easily as they currently handle fax and email.

Features

The Infinite PPG supports PAP (Push Application Protocol) for communication with other applications. This is an XML-based API developed by the WAP Forum, and now under the management of the Open Mobile Alliance. The PPG supports three methods of delivering messages to the mobile device:

-- SMS Modem. For low to medium traffic (up to 1,800 messages per hour), the PPG supports any of the popular SMS Modems.

-- SMSC. For higher volumes, the PPG can connect directly to an SMS Centre, which is typically located at a mobile operator's premises.

-- Direct connection. Where the target device is connected to the Internet and has a live IP address, the PPG can deliver messages directly, avoiding the need for SMS.

The PPG runs on the Windows Server platform, and can be installed in a multi-server configuration when support for higher traffic volumes and/or availability is required.

Applications

The WAP Push message consists of two sections -- a text message, plus a URL of a related WAP page. The receiving handset displays the text message, and gives the option to connect to the URL with a simple key press. For example, an email server today may alert the user that an important message has arrived by sending them an SMS message -- but the user is then unable to react to that message. With WAP Push, however, they will receive the alert, and will be given the option to enter a WAP session and view the full message, reply, forward, etc.

"We believe that WAP Push has great potential to build on the success of SMS," said David Bellis, International Business Development Manager, Captaris, Inc. "From the user's perspective, WAP Push is like a familiar SMS message, but with the important difference that the message can include a call-to-action. We see many opportunities for WAP Push to enhance existing SMS-based applications, and give the user a better experience."

Target Market

At the high end, the PPG is likely to be sold together with the Infinite WAP Gateway, with mobile operators as the primary target market. Every operator implementing MMS will need a WAP Gateway and PPG.

Infinite PPG is also suitable for the enterprise client market that offers services to their own customer-base. One example is the banking industry. Many banks have already implemented separate SMS and WAP channels to allow mobile customers to interact with their services. WAP Push forms a natural bridge between the two services, making each more attractive to the end-user.

Product Availability

The product is available for immediate purchase. Evaluation copies of the PPG are available for download from the Captaris Web site at http://www.captaris.com/PPG.
