CPS and SiRF Partner to Explore Future Mobile Location Technologies

Industry leaders work to combine best-of-breed network and satellite-based location technologies

CAMBRIDGE, England - (July 28, 2003) - CPS (Cambridge Positioning Systems Ltd), a location technology provider, today announced a partnership with SiRF Technology, Inc., the leading provider of GPS-enabled silicon and software location platforms, to explore development of enhanced mobile location technologies that will deliver faster Time to First fix positions and ultimately higher-accuracy performance for location-aware devices. The agreement calls for both organizations to work jointly to assess feasibility of a hybrid solution that combines the network-based Matrix portfolio offered by CPS, along with SiRF’s satellite-based Multimode Aided-GPS (A-GPS) technology.

The study is intended to assess solutions that improve location availability in asynchronous networks such as Global System for Mobile communication (GSM). By utilizing location information from both satellites and wireless networks, the combined solution under consideration would ensure that users experience high accuracy - as well as high yield and fast location fixes - wherever they may be.

“Consumers and enterprises alike are in dire need for a solution that pinpoints users’ exact locations, wherever they may be,” said Chris Wade, CEO of CPS. “Both SiRF and CPS share the vision of bringing the most highly accurate location-based technologies possible to market. A hybrid approach, such as we are exploring, would provide mobile subscribers with the confidence of using the most accurate location-based technologies available, anywhere.”

“Expanding into network-based hybrid location technologies is a natural evolution for the SiRF Multi-mode location platform,” said Kanwar Chadha, founder and vice president of marketing and business development for SiRF Technology. “It is our objective to study our synergies, and ultimately we hope to combine the expertise and experience of our mutual network and satellite location-based technologies to deliver a superior new platform.”

About Cambridge Positioning Systems Ltd

CPS is the high-accuracy location enabler for the wireless world. Through consistent innovation, CPS has developed new ways of helping people pinpoint their whereabouts - via a standard mobile handset. The company’s solution is known as Matrix, based on the E-OTD (Enhanced Observed Time Difference) standard designed for GSM - the world's largest and fastest growing wireless technology with over 850 million customers worldwide. Already adopted by the world's leading equipment and handset vendors, E-OTD is now being deployed in key markets.

About SiRF Technology

SiRF Technology, Inc. develops and markets semiconductor and software products that are designed to enable location-awareness in high-volume mobile consumer devices and commercial applications. Location-awareness refers to the ability of a device to determine and make use of the information regarding its location. SiRF’s products enable a range of devices to utilize GPS to detect location. They have been integrated into mobile consumer devices, such as automobile navigation systems, cellular phones, GPS-based mobile computing peripherals, and handheld GPS navigation devices, and into commercial applications, such as property tracking devices and fleet management systems. SiRF markets and sells its products in four target markets: wireless handheld, automotive, mobile computing, and embedded consumer applications.
